This rare original Harper’s Weekly (Vol. V — No. 227, New York, Saturday, May 4, 1861) is a true time capsule. Just three weeks after Confederate forces opened fire on Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861 — the very first shots of the American Civil War — this stunning full-page engraving shows Charleston citizens gathered on rooftops, watching the bombardment unfold across the harbor.

You can almost hear the distant cannon fire and feel the tension in the air as smoke rises from the fort. Harper’s Weekly rushed this powerful illustration to press so the nation could see the war’s opening act with their own eyes. It’s living history you can hold in your hands.

I’ve carefully preserved and brought this 165-year-old newspaper back to vivid life so its story can be told again.
