The Friendly Bookworm Bookstore, Dixon’s only bookstore, offers a broad selection of materials. Often ignored is a book cart labeled “Vintage.” Six shelves, some 20+ feet of books, offer a diverse selection of mainly hardback books, most published from the 1930s to the 1960s. Patrons should always browse the Vintage books as they often include some unexpected treasures. Recently, I noticed novels by Isak Dinesen, James Joyce, Josephine Tey and Herman Wouk; non-fiction by Alistair Cooke and Jack Paar, cookbooks, and oddities including a 1954 Complete Book of Etiquette; a 1957 edition of Goren’s New Contract Bridge Complete; and a 1955 Oxford Dictionary of Quotations. Showing that “Vintage” can be subject to interpretation, there was also a copy of Jennie – The Life of Lady Randolph Churchill – The Romantic Years, 1854-1895. This was among the most recent publications on the book cart, dating from 1969. Most Vintage books are $1.00.

Jigsaw puzzles are popular and The Friendly Bookworm Bookstore usually has a wide assortment ranging from simple puzzles designed for children to complex puzzles with 500 or more pieces aimed at the dissectologist, a puzzle enthusiast. The term originated in the late 1700s when the first puzzles were created as dissected maps, wooden maps broken into sections to aid in teaching geography. Over time, these evolved into what we know as jigsaw puzzles. Most of the jigsaw puzzles in the bookstore are $2.00, making them a great bargain. The store also offers board games, e-games, and, in our Sports Section, books about popular card games like poker.
