There is always a lot of interest in specific things at estate sales. Sometimes people are looking for tools, clothing or toys. Sometimes they come seeking antiques, unique treasures, art glass or that elusive pattern of favorite vintage Pyrex! And often times we get asked about local collectibles - things that have to do with the National Peanut Festival, the Wiregrass, the history of Alabama or a specific city. There have been many times when I have been asked “do you have any cookbooks?” I usually wonder are they looking for a certain one for nostalgic reasons. You know, maybe one of those collections of recipes from the little old ladies at the local church in the tiny town they grew up in, or maybe they’re looking for a cookbook filled with recipes from someone who was on Food Network or maybe one of local chef/restaurant owner and Top Chef winner, Kelsey Bernard Clark. Often times though they are looking for one of these — the Down Home In High Style cookbook! This is a Special Edition 2004 hard cover version SIGNED by Jack DeLoney cookbook! This cookbook features treasured recipes from the Wiregrass, and artwork by artist Jack DeLony from Ozark, Alabama.
Did you know that the “Wiregrass” consist of nine counties? Can you name them all? It was named for a plant that is a type of grass that grew along the Chattahoochee river in Alabama, Georgia, and Florida. I never knew this until I read this in this cookbook. This wire grass grass grows about 12 to 15 inches in height and has a deep seated root system. It’s a bunch of grass that has long round wire like blades and spikes. It is said that this grass is one of the hardest grasses to get rid of in the nation. Interesting facts, right? Well, I like to think those of us who grew up here are also some of the hardest people to get rid of - not that we want to get rid of the nice people around here!
This cookbook is a collection of wonderful traditional, simple and southern recipes. This cookbook is always very desirable so instead of popping a price tag on it, and then having everyone scramble, we’re going to place it on auction with the winner being the highest bidder by Sunday night!  So…. if you’ve always dreamed of having your own copy, this is the perfect one to grab. It’s in excellent condition with only very very minor corner bends near the spine on a few pages. Otherwise it is in overall excellent near new condition.
This one would be beautiful displayed on a shelf in your home, but also would be perfect as a gift for the upcoming holiday season for the special person in your life that has always wanted this book.
