He finally said goodbye to all of this
and hello to oblivion R.I.P. Tim Curry
We are deeply saddened by the passing of Tim Curry, who has died at the age of 80.
Tim Curry gave us an entire collection of characters that we simply couldn't forget. For many, he will forever be Dr. Frank-N-Furter, the unforgettable character he brought to life in The Rocky Horror Picture Show. What began as a stage role in the 1970s became one of the most iconic performances in movie history and helped turn Rocky Horror into a cultural phenomenon.
But if you grew up watching movies and television in the 1970s, 80s and 90s, chances are Tim Curry was part of your life in ways you may not even have realized.
He was the wonderfully frantic Wadsworth in Clue. The sinister Pennywise in Stephen King's It. Rooster Hannigan in Annie. The terrifying Lord of Darkness in Legend. Long John Silver in Muppet Treasure Island. And the unforgettable hotel concierge in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York.
He could be hilarious one minute and genuinely frightening the next. He could command a stage, carry a musical performance, play a villain, make us laugh, or simply lend his unmistakable voice to an animated character.
That voice alone could tell you who was speaking before you even saw him. And that's perhaps what made Tim Curry so special. He never seemed afraid to go all the way.
Whether the role called for camp, comedy, horror, drama or something completely outrageous, he committed to it completely. And behind all those larger-than-life performances was an actor who had an extraordinary love for his craft. Curry worked extensively in theater as well as film and television, earning three Tony nominations and a Daytime Emmy during his career.
His life changed dramatically after suffering a stroke in 2012, but he continued to work through the challenges and remained remarkably open about his experiences. In one of his final major interviews, he reflected on his life and career with the same wit and honesty that had defined him for decades.
For those of us who remember the movies, television shows, video stores, Saturday afternoons and late-night television of the past, losing Tim Curry feels like losing another piece of that world.
We remember watching him. We remember being frightened by him. We remember laughing at him.
And some of us probably remember wondering, “Wait… is that the same guy?” every time he appeared in something completely different. That's the mark of a truly great character actor.
Tim Curry didn't just play characters. He made them unforgettable. Your work will continue to be discovered by new generations who may see you for the first time and think, “Who IS this guy?” And then they'll understand.
