A bit of relief…

The Kennedy Center’s former chairman, who was ousted by President Donald Trump in 2025, acquired the artwork for more than $2 million. It will eventually be displayed in the Sculpture Garden of the National Gallery of Art.

Happy Birthday Grandma Moses!

Grandma Moses and Norman Rockwell were two of America's most beloved artists of the mid-1900s, their paintings providing solace and a sense of stability for a country recovering from the Depression, World War II, and navigating the anxieties of the Cold War. The two artists, who lived only about 15 miles from one another from 1939 to 1953, were brought together in 1948 by Hallmark in a marketing campaign to sell Christmas cards. That same year, in a publicity stunt staged by Joyce Hall, president of the greeting card company, Rockwell decorated an enormous cake with scenes from Moses' painting Out for Christmas Trees (1946) with buttercream icing for her 88th birthday. The two artists remained friendly, with Moses modeling for Rockwell, appearing in his Saturday Evening Post cover that year, Christmas Homecoming. Rockwell made another appearance at Moses' birthday, which were becoming national celebrations, that next year, decorating a much smaller cake, which he is helping her slice in this photo.

Aw. This came up for some reason today. I think this was from her funeral. Her house was recently sold and they’re doing massive renovations and much in the yard has been cut back. The split rail is very dilapidated but the wrought iron fencing is still up I think. It’s one of the few with any of that fencing still around. Annie Jump Cannon’a house still has it. I miss Holly and Charles. We painted there a lot. My last Plein air was there last year I think and painted her birdbath. Charles got it working for her. She so loved the birds splashing on the water and her beautiful azaleas blooming in spring.
