I was in my 5th grade classroom starting the day when my principal came running in to whisper what had happened. I think I looked at her like she was crazy really not believing what she was saying. She said the tv was on in her office and to come down during our break. All day we went in and out of her office which was the only place we were allowed to talk about what was going on. We were not allowed to mention anything to the children about what was happening because we’re so close to New York City. Some of their parents might have been there. But all day long parents came and took their children out of school and the ones remaining behind were at a loss as to what was happening. We just told them they had to go and talk to their parents that night. Then we spent the next month or more talking about the tragedy. I don’t think I’ve ever seen kids who understood what real heroes were like those kids did.
