Okay... so we broke the rules.

If you know anything about Mitchell Wool, you know we don't mind coloring outside the lines every now and then—especially when it comes to knitting. After all... don't put us in a gauge box! 😉

This week's Get Your Stitch On feature is Boardwalk by Keidi Kirrmaier.

While the pattern is written for fi*****ng weight yarn, we simply couldn't resist casting it on in our Farm Friends DK. We sized down two sizes, used a US 6 needle, and ended up with the relaxed, oversized fit we were dreaming of.

Patterns are wonderful starting points, but don't be afraid to play with gauge, swatch a little, and do a bit of knitting math to make a project your own. Some of our favorite garments have come from breaking the "rules."

Need a little help with the numbers? Send Jessica a message—she's always happy to help you crunch the gauge math and get you knitting with confidence.

Because sometimes the best projects begin with, "What if we tried it this way?"

Our Indigo comes from... ewe guessed it, Indigo!

Specifically Indigofera tinctoria.

Key Plant CharacteristicsHeight & Spread: Grows 2 to 3 feet (and up to 4 feet) tall in a shrub like orientation.
Native Range: Native to parts of tropical Africa and tropical Asia / the Indian subcontinent.
It will grow locally as well!

Indigo is a tricky wicket! Cindy isn't one to swear but if she did, it would be over Indigo pots! They're a lot like sourdough & kombucha, a living organism that pretty much does what it wants. She's perfected her process quite well and nine times out of ten it's a great success! Cindy studied in Oaxaca MX with her dye guru Demetrio and this burst open the doors on Indigo production, perfecting a method to minimize the crocking effect.

Crocking is when a plant leaves behind additional dye on the yarn fibers, it comes off with friction. Not releasing much in the rinse water, but with the action of the yarn pulling across your fingers. So you might get blue hands with this one, how much so depends on the pH of you skin, or if you're wearing hand lotion. Not a big deal, just wash it off. It might color your needles though, so best to use metal with this color.

We use indigo in both our Indigo and Sky blue hues.

Yarn Spotlight! Learn more about the yarns we grow, purchase from other family owned American farms, and dye with plants right here on our farm in Michigan.

First in our series is our BFL Fi*****ng.

BFL stands for Blue Faced Leicester and boy do they have an interesting look! Top on the list if we add another breed on the Mitchell Wool farm will be BFL. They're a delight to look at, their crimped, semi-lustrous sheen, long staple length (3–6 inches), provides excellent drape. Not super soft, for that you'll want our Targhee or Rambouillet. But what it lacks in softness, it more than makes up for in sheen! BFL is Cindy's absolute favorite fiber to dye, it takes the PLANT DYES vibrantly, almost as much so as a superwash. Which of course, you won't find anywhere around our barn!

Our BFL is raised in Northern Michigan and dyed with plants on our farm.
28 stitches to 4" on a size 3 needle is the sweet spot for this one.
