A Poem for You by the Lake

The spirit of this poem has been a guide and comfort to me since I was a teenager. May it guide you as well!

“The Peace of Wild Things”, by Wendell Berry

When despair for the world grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children’s lives might be,

I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.

I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.

And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting with their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

Four reasons that native plants are a good choice for our lakes’ shorelines.

Side note: I’ll be partnering with Scott County Soil and Water Conservation District to teach a workshop on Nature Journaling and native shoreline plants, August 27, 5pm-7pm. Thanks, Hannah from SWSCD for these helpful categories of the benefits of native shoreline plants. Thanks to Prior Lake-Spring Lake Watershed District for hosting this event!

What an honor to receive the “Spirit of Powderhorn” award. Powderhorn is truly an art loving community, something seen and experienced year round.

And what an even greater honor to be able to bear witness to the stories of your connection to the waters. They are full of firsts, lasts, and a thousand moments in between. They are laced with smiles and tears, comfort and memory and joy and sadness and future looking anticipation and hope. Thanks for sharing your stories with me.

Often it’s the places you pass everyday that become the most special. The paths we walk after a meal, the spots we drive by, the places we meet a friend, the hills we gather to grieve or find strength in community, the benches we go to sit by the water and think. We may even have a few places like this.

Stop by Powderhorn Art Fair this weekend and find a reminder of your special lake spot. I’ll be there alongside 200 other artists. August 1+2, 10am-5pm
