DESIGNERS SPOTLIGHT:
DESIGNERS WHO INSPIRE US | ELSA SCHIAPARELLI | 1890-1973

Elsa Schiaparelli taught us to be a little weird. And we mean that as the highest possible compliment.

In 1920s and '30s Paris, fashion was serious business. Elsa Schiaparelli looked at it and apparently thought: What if we put a lobster on a dress? So she did. She collaborated with surrealist artist Salvador Dalí to create the famous Lobster Dress. She made a hat shaped like a shoe. She created dresses decorated with tears, skeletons and optical illusions. She introduced the world to a shade of brilliant hot pink she called Shocking Pink.

While her great contemporary Coco Chanel was stripping fashion down, Schiaparelli was gleefully turning it into art. And that may be what we love most about her. She wasn't afraid of strange. She wasn't afraid of humor. She wasn't afraid of people looking at something she'd created and asking: “What on earth is THAT?”

Schiaparelli understood something we occasionally forget: Fashion doesn't always need to be tasteful. It doesn't always need to be practical. And it certainly doesn't always need to be serious. Sometimes what we wear can simply make us—and everyone around us—smile.

Wear the unexpected thing. Choose the ridiculous accessory. Try the color everyone told you was too much. Be a little weird. Most importantly, be yourself. Because the people we remember are rarely the ones who spent their lives trying to look like everybody else.
