Ellis Canvas Tents

Ellis Canvas Tents Handcrafted and High-Quality Tents made in Durango, CO for thirty years. There’s a big wide world out there waiting to be explored.

Our canvas tents & bedrolls will take you there and back. We’ve looked hard at age-old designs and spent thirty years innovating those ideas to create the most functional tents in the world. We build our tents to stand the test of time, and we are proud to hold a place in the long and beautiful story of people living extraordinary experiences at the edges of the earth. It’s the story of canvas she

lters and wood-fired stoves glowing in the darkness and fueling our endless human curiosity. We've been making canvas tents for over 30 years. Our signature designs are all handmade at my workshop in Durango, Colorado. While Ellis Canvas nods to the traditional tents that built the west, our design improvements create better functionality and more stable shelter from the elements. We know the rigors of living and working in remote areas and we build our tents to withstand the most extreme conditions, keeping you warm, dry, and comfortable so you can focus on your work or simply enjoy your time in the wilderness.

Summer heat be damned. With the Ellis Split-Torrent, we’ve put outdoor shaded living and breezy indoor sleeping under the same weather-ready canopy. Pull up a chair, let the breeze blow through, and let the rest of the world sweat it out.

Howdy Friends,

Wanted to give you a heads up before it shows up on the site.

Starting June 15, we’re adjusting prices across our tent line — the first increase we’ve made since 2022. It’s not something we do lightly. For four years we held the line while canvas, hardware, and shipping costs kept climbing. We absorbed what we could for as long as we could, but a small correction is overdue.

The increase is modest — 2 to 6 percent across the Prairie, Shackleton, and Split-Torrent lines. We kept it as small as we reasonably could. The Cowboy Bedroll line isn’t changing at all.

If you’ve been circling a tent, now’s a good time to pull the trigger. Current prices are locked in through June 14.
We appreciate your understanding and your support. Thanks for being along for the ride.

Happy Trails,
Dave, Denis, & Allie

Summer’s on the horizon. Time to trade in the house for the dirt and clock for the sun. There’s freedom in that in-between space out in the wild. Get out there, re-center, and live a little. Our tents are built for it.

Like many things in nature, it started off with necessity. Dave Ellis had been sewing for his entire life, first as an apprentice in an upholstery shop, then starting his own business making custom canvas awnings and boat covers.  It wasn’t until the Cowboys started calling that his true craft found him. The Cowboys wanted range tents, a simple pyramid design that has been used across the American West for more than a hundred years.  Dave began building them along with traditional bedrolls that the cowboys needed to work and live.  As he learned the craft of tentsmithing, he began to see things differently.  He realized that these old designs which had remained the same since the 1800s could be improved upon, both in their forms and in the materials he used. Sometimes our paths are chosen for us.
