Design at its best is problem solving. A mature oak, once a defining presence on the slope, had begun leaning dangerously toward the house and was accelerating erosion across the hillside. Its removal was a difficult but necessary decision. In response, a retaining wall carves into the grade, establishing a walkway along the house while managing stormwater and hillside erosion. The wall curves along the hillside to accommodate the below‑grade oak stump and to hold a small patio perched on the hill. Stormwater is guided away from the house around and under the patio to an existing drainage channel downslope.
