This pack remains one of the more novel builds we’ve seen over the years. It may not appear to be out of the ordinary until you take a closure look.

Henry Lin built this pack system to function in multiple ways. You can use a smaller EDC type insert or a larger roll top travel system.

Using Challenge Sailcloth ECOPAK fabrics enabled the pack to have colorful panels that matched with world class fabrics.

Bartacks aren’t just for looks but for those of us with a home machine, they can be difficult to replicate.

The good news is that on certain machines, you can perform a very similar stitch with the zigzag and button hole features.

Each machine will vary some. But you can use the same basic steps to dial in your DIY Bartack.

These are great for places like handles straps or other high pull areas where you want to ensure there is a strong connection between the feature you’re attaching and the panel you’re attaching the feature to.

This is a pretty wild material.

Meet X-Pac® UX20ST. A brand new 2.9 oz laminate from the hyperTEC™ lineup.

The face is woven entirely from UPE.
The X-Ply® reinforcement is Ultra-PE.
And somehow X-Pac® managed to put it all together in a material that weighs less than 3 oz.

In your hands, it feels light, crisp, and surprisingly substantial for the weight.

This is the kind of fabric we get excited about because it opens up some interesting possibilities for ultralight packs, bags, and bike gear.

And if you like being the first to try new stuff, this one is especially fun.

UX20ST is brand new and (currently) only available at Ripstop by the Roll.

One of the many reasons X-Pac fabrics have become synonymous with quality is because of their laminating technology.

For bonded materials, the lamination is everything. Without a strong bond, the material falls apart. But it’s easy to assume everybody would laminate the same way, right?

While all laminates have similar processes, X-Pac likely has the most experience with bonded materials. Their development background is considered the very best.

The result? A material that is also considered one of the best.

We’re polling our DIY audience to see if there’s enough interest in custom cutting.

Although it’s obviously not as low cost as cutting things yourself, we are working to make it as affordable as possible.

Let us know what you think of this opportunity!

Here’s a low-tech way to creat custom strap appliqués.

1️⃣ First you take your shoulder strap pattern piece and outline the perimeter on a new piece of paper.

2️⃣ Draw lines on top on top pf the outline that represent the appliqués you want on the strap.

3️⃣ On a new piece of paper, trace each appliqué piece out and then include a 3/10” seam allowance before cutting

Now you have custom appliqué pieces for your shoulder strap!

Why 22°? 🤔

X-Pac® is instantly recognizable by its signature X-Ply® reinforcement. But that X doesn’t cross the fabric at any random angle.

So why 22°? Why not 27°? Or 45°?

We asked Taylor North (head of technical fabrics at DP) to break down the story behind X-Ply®, what the different X-Ply® constructions actually mean, and how that 22° angle became one of the most recognizable signatures in technical fabrics.

What angle would you have guessed? 👇

Marc gets it…

Most of us don’t start making our own gear because it’s the the easiest thing. We do it because accomplishing hard things is fun!

And we like having new gear to play with in the mean time…
