What metals do we use for permanent jewelry?

At Bezalel & Co., we only use gold-filled and sterling silver. In my opinion, these are the best options for permanent jewelry because they’re beautiful, durable, and made for everyday wear.

I personally don’t use stainless steel because it’s more of an industrial metal, and I don’t love the idea of having that permanently attached to your body. Gold-plated jewelry can also be tricky because it’s a lower-quality finish that will eventually wear or turn.

So when you’re getting permanent jewelry, always ask your vendor what metals they use and make sure you feel comfortable with it.

And yes, our chains are very affordable right now, but that’s because we’re closing this fall and selling through our remaining inventory. There’s no compromise on quality, just a unique situation for my business.

I’ve been dreaming about offering some hands-on jewelry classes this fall, and I’d love your input!

Right now I’m thinking about:

The most customizable option would let you choose your own chains, beads, wire, and charms to create something that’s completely you in sterling silver or gold-filled.

Will your permanent jewelry tarnish?

Our chains are high-quality gold-filled and sterling silver, which means they’re made to be worn every day. Gold-filled jewelry has a thick layer of real gold bonded to the metal underneath — it’s not the same as gold plated — and sterling silver can always be polished back up if needed.

The biggest thing to avoid? Heavy chemicals, especially spas, hot tubs, and certain pools. I’ve only had my chains tarnish once, and it was after a spa day — but even then, the silver polished right back up with warm water, soap, and a little care.

So the answer is: with good-quality metals, tarnishing is not very likely, and if it happens, it’s usually fixable.
