Did you know that Eagle Lake has been one of the top hunting towns for more than 100 years? Our oldest hunting club celebrated their 100 year anniversary a few years back. We may not have the bird numbers like they did back then, but we are still a perfect little hunting town—and bonus, only an hour from Houston.

On weekends during hunting season, after-the-hunt breakfast is served at the market so day hunters and club hunters can gather with their buddies and share stories, partake in the Texas hunting tradition of tacos and Bloody Mary’s.

We invite you to come hang out and tell the tall tales with your friends; muddy boots, dogs and all! Oh, and bring your ducks and geese from last season so we can process them into duck chorizo, boudin, sausage, or snack sticks! You’ll be glad you did.

Texas Teal Season will be upon us soon—September 19.

Long before sunrise near Eagle Lake, the rice fields fill with the low murmur of duck calls and the soft slap of decoys settling onto still water. 🦆 This stretch of the upper Texas Gulf Coast has been a waterfowling destination for generations, where flooded rice stubble left over from harvest becomes one of the best duck habitats in North America every winter.

Hunters wake up hours before light to set spreads of a dozen or more decoys, then wait low in a blind of cut cordgrass as the sky slowly turns from black to gray to that first streak of orange. A good retriever earns its keep here, breaking the stillness the second wings cup toward the decoys, and there is a particular kind of quiet concentration that settles over a blind right before the shot. 🌾

A lot of these hunters learned this exact spot from a father or a grandfather, and they are teaching their own kids the same patience now. It is less about the birds in the bag some mornings and more about who is sitting next to you in the blind. Did anyone teach you a hunting or fishing tradition that you still carry on today?
