What have we been up to since our final sap run? 🍁
Every season starts long before the sap actually flows. We begin tapping trees in February so we’re ready when Mother Nature decides it’s time. With 5,700 taps, it takes the two of us nearly 20 days to get everything set up — usually working through deep snow and only managing a couple hundred trees at a time.
This summer Steve plans to finish another 300 taps just to bring us to an even 6,000 trees… because why not? 😄 We could go even bigger, but for now we’re staying put.
Since the season ended April 27, we’ve been busy soaking and cleaning equipment, plus unplugging every single tap. Steve has been tackling that solo while I snuck away for a little family vacation in North Carolina. He still has about 1,200 taps left to pull!
Next up: firewood season. Steve will cut, split, stack, and dry about 15–20 cord for next year’s boil.
And… we also have something exciting in the works that will help improve how we operate here at the sugar shack. We’re not quite ready to share yet, but we’ll keep you posted as we work toward that goal. 🍁
This time of year my “day job” really ramps up with real estate, and Steve is usually deep in the woods working most days. Between the two of us, it gets a little tricky keeping regular shop hours.
