131 years ago!

While the story of Captain Obadiah Donaldson running into a giant octopus just 5 miles off the coast of Connecticut (this would put it directly in the center of Long Island Sound) may seem far-fetched, it is important to note that sailors have reported encounters with massive cephalopods for as long as they have been taking to the sea. Also, over the years, numerous hulking, rotting cadavers of unknown beasts have washed ashore all around the globe. Referred to simply as "globsters", many of these colossal decomposing masses often remain unidentified, but in many instances, witnesses have claimed some to be gargantuan cephalopods, not just squid but octopus as well. With so little of our oceans explored who knows what wonders and horrors await our discovery! Keep it Creepy!

54 years ago today!

Momo, the Missouri Monster, shambled out of the woods near Louisiana, Missouri, and quickly exploded into national headlines as monster fever washed over the area. While there would be other sightings and encounters, it was the Harrison family's story that truly captured the public's imagination. Before long, armed posses were roving the countryside in search of the elusive beast. What began as a sighting of a Bigfoot-like creature soon involved mysterious lights in the sky and other bizarre phenomena. Although a few sightings would trickle out in the years that followed, the majority of Momo encounters were concentrated in 1972.

Did Momo return home? Move on? Or did it just get better at hiding?

When the Cherokee first came to the mountains of the southern Appalachians they found that someone else was already there.
Not animals. People. Small and pale with eyes so sensitive to daylight that they lived underground and moved only at night. The Cherokee called them the Moon-Eyed People and the stories passed down through generations were consistent in the details that mattered. They were shorter than the Cherokee. Their skin was pale. Their eyes were large and could not bear the light of the sun. They came near houses after dark and people inside could hear them talking but the warning was always the same. Do not go out. Do not watch.
In the morning the corn would be gathered. The field cleared as if a whole force of men had been at work through the night.
The Cherokee eventually drove them out. According to some accounts the Creek attacked during a full moon, when the light was so bright the Moon-Eyed People could not function, and finished what the Cherokee had started. The pale people retreated into the deep mountains. Into the caves. And then they were gone.
Or they were not gone. They were simply deeper in.
On Fort Mountain in northwest Georgia an 850-foot stone wall still stands. Built sometime between 400 and 1500 CE by someone before the Cherokee arrived. When Tennessee Governor John Sevier visited the site in the early 1800s and asked the Cherokee chief Oconostota who had built it, the chief told him it had been built by white men from across the great water.
In 1882 a newspaper documented the discovery of burial grounds near Sparta Tennessee containing skeletons no more than 19 inches long, small enough to be children but with adult teeth worn down with age, buried in stone coffins with shell artifacts.
In Murphy North Carolina a carved soapstone statue of two wide-eyed round-faced figures stands outside the Cherokee County Historical Museum.
Nobody has ever fully explained who the Moon-Eyed People were. Every theory raises more questions than it answers.
The caves in the Appalachian mountains are deep and old and most of them have never been fully explored.

In the pine woods of Chatham County, North Carolina, there is a bare circle of ground where, folks say, nothing will grow. 🌲 They call it the Devil's Tramping Ground, and the legend is as old as the county's memory.

The story goes that the Devil paces that ring at night, plotting his mischief, and that his tread has poisoned the soil so no plant takes root inside it. The most repeated claim is the one people test on a dare, that anything you leave in the circle overnight, a stick, a stone, a hat, will be flung out or gone by morning. Campers have tried it for a hundred years and come back with the same uneasy grin. 🕯️

Whether it is folklore or just odd chemistry in the dirt, a spot like this holds a community together around one shared shiver. If your town has a place like that, a clearing, a well, a stretch of woods that carries a rule everyone knows to follow, I would love to hear the rule.
