Hi! This is not a Halloween post, even though it feels kinda like fall today.

These guys showed up here last week and have been having a pretty great time hanging out. We suspect they arrived unintentionally, so we're sharing their adventures in the hopes of reuniting them with their family. If you recognize these fellows, reach out and let us know how you think they got here. If they're your friends, we'll happily cut back their hours so they can come home.

In the meantime, watch our stories for more pics of their adventures.

"I was fortunate to receive a young sweet birch sapling from the University of Guelph, originating from one of the last remaining wild populations near St. Catharines, Ontario. Its bark closely resembles black cherry, making it one of my favorite native trees."

Ken has a lot more to say about this stately native tree on out blog — https://mastersons.net/blog/2026/7/20/sweet-birch

Blue vervain, also called swamp verbena, is a short-lived, herbaceous perennial that often behaves like a biennial. It readily self-seeds to maintain its place in the landscape, where it prefers full sun and moist-to-wet soils. Blue vervain thrives in rain gardens, bioswales, pond edges, and other low-lying areas, and is generally resistant to deer and serious pests. In Ken's opinion, it is a must-have plant for residential rain gardens and green infrastructure projects.

It also has deep cultural significance to WNY's indigenous people, which you can read more about on our blog — https://mastersons.net/blog/parkers-picks-blue-vervain

Ken picked a great one this week — Winterberry, a deciduous holly that is a pollinator and bird magnet, which Ken gets into more here on our blog: https://mastersons.net/blog/winterberry

Keep in mind, winterberry is a dioecious species, meaning male and female flowers occur on separate plants. If you want berries for your feathered friends, you'll need both male and female plants. One male can pollinate several females, so tucking one within a mainly female hedge works great!
