HEAD ON A PLATTER. We close out the church year celebrating the martyrdom of Eóin Baiste - St. John the Baptist.

This commemorates the closing of the Old Testament period and the heralding of the Soiscéal - the Gospel - in the New.

It is also a celebration of renewal. Just when things seem like they have crashed and burned, this is when our greatest glory lies before us ☦️❤️

Today is the Feast of the Transfer of the Holy Mandylion (now more commonly known as the Holy Shroud of Turin) from Edessa to Constantinople! ☦️❤️
It was a providential move, as it saved the sacred relic of Christ’s passion, death, and resurrection from desecration at the hands of the Saracens (Muslims).

How did it end up in France, from whence it was transferred again to Turin, Italy? It was stolen by Crusaders, likely during the 13th century sack of Constantinople.

While this was a most disgraceful and sacrilegious act by very un-Christian Crusaders, it shows how the Lord’s providence brings good out of evil.

Because the Mandylion was saved once again from the Muslims, who eventually took Constantinople.
