Since our founding in 1895, the Ladiesโ€™ Village Improvement Society has been dedicated to keeping East Hampton one of the most beautiful villages in America. We maintain our wonderful village trees and greens, provide scholar- ships to local high school students, preserve local landmarks, and provide community events and programming including our annual summer fair, Halloween and holiday open houses, Easter egg hunt, and so much more. The LVIS cares for over 3,500 trees shading the Villageโ€™s streets and replaces those lost to disease or age. The LVIS also funds the maintenance of the village commons and greens surrounding Town Pond, and championed historic preservation efforts, including the creation of Village historic districts. For nearly 70 years, the LVIS has awarded college scholarships to East Hampton High School seniors and to adult women returning to college. This year, despite the impact of Covid on our fundraising, we awarded over $190,000 in scholarships to 24 students. LVIS strives to make East Hampton the best place to live in America. Your support will ensure the continuation of our efforts to support our community and enhance the lives our residents and visitors. LVIS is located at 95 Main Street in the historic Gardiner Brown House. The grounds are open to the public and our thrift shops are open Tuesday through Saturday from 10am to 5pm where you can find a wonderful selection of menโ€™s and womenโ€™s clothing, books, housewares, furniture, artwork and more. None of what we do would be possible without thousands of hours of work by our volunteers, both members and nonmembers. When you work with the LVIS, you join a vibrant organization of people committed to strengthening our community. We are always looking for new members, and we also welcome volunteers and hope youโ€™ll consider joining us. Please consider volunteering, donating gently used merchandise to our shops and attending our community events.

Our next Hearts & Hands of LVIS spotlight is longtime volunteer Bonnie Pizzorno! ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿคฒ

Bonnie became a member of LVIS in 1987 and, after retiring from teaching in 2010, became even more involved in volunteering. Over the years, she has served on the Board, co-chaired our annual Fair for nine years, served on several special committees and currently serves as Vice Chair of Books. ๐Ÿ“šโœจ

For Bonnie, volunteering with LVIS is about supporting a mission she believes in, giving back to the East Hampton community and, just as importantly, the friendships she has made with fellow members along the way. ๐Ÿค—

Thank you, Bonnie, for your many years of dedication to LVIS and our community! Swipe ๐Ÿ‘‰๏ธ to learn more about Bonnie and what keeps her coming back to volunteer year after year.

This magnificent linden is estimated to be more than 200 years old, but its age isnโ€™t the only thing that makes it special. Unlike our native linden, this tree is a Crimean linden, ๐‘‡๐‘–๐‘™๐‘–๐‘Ž ร— ๐‘’๐‘ข๐‘โ„Ž๐‘™๐‘œ๐‘Ÿ๐‘Ž. ๐ŸŒฟ

How it found its way to East Hampton remains a bit of a mystery. One possibility is that it was brought here by the British during their occupation of the Gardiner-Brown House during the Revolutionary War.

More than two centuries later, it still stands as a beautiful and intriguing piece of East Hamptonโ€™s living history. ๐Ÿ’š

Preserving the history and character of East Hampton has long been an important part of the LVIS mission. ๐Ÿกโœจ Today, we're kicking off our ๐‹๐š๐ง๐๐ฆ๐š๐ซ๐ค๐ฌ ๐…๐ข๐ฅ๐ž๐ฌ series to highlight some of the invaluable work the committee does for our community!

The LVIS Landmarks Committee has consistently supported historic preservation efforts throughout our community, including helping establish Village historic districts. In 1985, LVIS even purchased the historic Gardiner Brown House at 95 Main Street, saving it from demolition. Today, we're proud to call it our headquarters! ๐Ÿ’š

The annual Landmarks Luncheon supports this important work while celebrating East Hamptonโ€™s rich history and preservation efforts. This yearโ€™s luncheon will be held at the historic Maidstone Club on Saturday, October 24 from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., featuring guest speaker Michael Devonshire.

Best of all, proceeds from the luncheon help fund specific local preservation projects. ๐Ÿ‘ Support our Landmarks Committee and the many other LVIS projects working to preserve and enhance the community we all love. ๐ŸŒณ๐Ÿก Purchase your tickets or become a sponsor here: https://www.lvis.org/events/33rd-landmarks-luncheon-2026

It is said that the glories of East Hampton would be only memories without LVIS. ๐Ÿ’ญ

Imagineโ€ฆ Main Street ๐Ÿ“ without the open vista of our Village Green or our beloved pond. In 1895, the ladies of LVIS stepped in to prevent the pond from being drained and filled in, while also protecting the green from being transformed into a โ€œcity-likeโ€ park. ๐Ÿ‘๐ŸŒณ

More than 130 years later, both remain treasured parts of the village we know and love today. ๐Ÿ’š

Victoria has been a dedicated LVIS member for 26 years, lending her time and talents to the Annex, Menโ€™s, Nominating, Special Events, Fair and Nature Trail Committees, as well as serving on the Board. It all began when Past President Mary Fallon invited her to help at the Fair, and the rest is LVIS history! ๐Ÿค—

From greeting children as Peter Rabbit at our annual Easter Egg Hunt to the friendships sheโ€™s formed along the way, Victoriaโ€™s years with LVIS are filled with special memories and a true commitment to our community.

Weโ€™re so grateful for Victoriaโ€™s many years of dedication! Swipe ๐Ÿ‘‰ to learn more about her LVIS journey.

This shot features some of the magnificent American elms lining ๐Ÿ“ Main Street in our village.

These iconic trees are among the most important in LVISโ€™s tree program, but they are also one of the most challenged species we care for. LVIS treats the elms organically each year, while the Village works with Arbortech to chemically treat half of the trees every two years to help keep Dutch Elm Disease at bay.

While thereโ€™s no permanent solution, ongoing observation, evaluation and care help us protect these beautiful trees and preserve the character of our village for years to come. ๐Ÿ’š
