NEED ADVICE from fellow Cundy's Harbor gardeners!!
🍅🪏🦌🌱☀️

Background: The two raised beds outside of the store are an official University of Maine Cooperative Extension Master Gardener Project! Master Gardeners are trained volunteers who combat food insecurity across our state. Our modest little beds will (hopefully) grow tomatoes, eggplants, and peppers for our community!

NEED OPINIONS!! Last season, every night I put up deer fencing (you can see it lying in the bed in the picture)...and every day the store was open, I took it down. It's very ugly and clumsy (and kinda sharp ouch!). Basically, I have big wooden stakes woven through plastic fencing that I stick into the beds' soil. It was a very annoying task!!! (To quote one of my greatest customers, Jay, "I'm not complaining, I'm observing." 😂)

I did not see any evidence of deer. I have not personally seen deer in the store parking lot or at the wharf, but have seen tracks across Cundy's Harbor Rd, just up the street.

So gardeners... do we think deer are going to be a problem? Should I take the risk and ditch the fence? I acknowledge it is NOT fun taking the fence up and down... but I think it'd be even worse to come in for the day to a decimated garden. But I am willing to take the risk...I think?

What does everyone think? Any other ideas?

PS: Last year was a doozy of a growing season. We all remember the 12 consecutive weekends of rain followed by an epic drought (that we're still in!!). Hopefully, this year will go better!

Thank you for your help!
💚 Liza

In Harpswell, Maine...enjoying a lobster roll at Holbrook's Wharf overlooking the working waterfront makes for one of the best seafood meals with a view in this area of the state! This spot sits on a real working dock that’s been busy since the 1830s, where you can watch lobstermen pull traps and bring in fresh catch right beside you. Take a seat at Holbrook’s Harborside Grill and order a lobster roll or fried haddock while fishing boats pass by just a few feet away on the water. Walk over to the old general store, opened back in 1898, now filled with local beer, wine, and goods made across Maine. The wharf is run by a nonprofit and even hosts art shows inside the historic Holbrook-Trufant House, once home to a ship captain. It’s a simple, real-deal coastal Maine stop with great food and a view that’s hard to beat.

From Gina Snyder: Harpswell's annual roadside cleanup in commemoration of Earth Day will take place the week of April 19-25. Earth Day, April 22, is right in the middle of the week.

We’ve got new seating at the store! Who recognizes where this iconic bench comes from? ☺️

With the store all tucked in for the winter and after a couple weeks of rest following a long season, this is a heartfelt THANK YOU to all of the wonderful people who visited The Holbrook Store for my first season! To those passing through while on vacation, to my regulars who kept coming back, and to my endlessly supportive friends who kept me company during the long working days, THANK YOU! Serving happy people on vacation and seeing locals embrace nostalgia and tradition was an honor! It is an honor to be your shopkeeper!

It is very difficult to be a small business right now. The cost of doing business is exorbitant, and it’s expensive for customers to patronize small businesses. I am so grateful that so many people went out of their way to support my store and shop local. Thank you, thank you.

And thank you to Bill of Auspicious Citrus for this charming poem!

See you in the spring!

Love,
Liza
