Why do we even have that lever? 😉✨✍️

Just want you to know that back flop STUNG—not as much as being rejected, but it was worth it to remind you…

Everyone has faced rejection at some point. From those currently with agents and just starting their careers to NYT bestselling authors.

Everyone. Even your author heroes.

How do you get through it? Well, that’s different for everyone. You’re allowed to wallow, you’re allowed to be depressed or crash out. You’re allowed all your feels. 🫂

But community helps. Cheering each other on. Being excited for someone who does get the offer, the deal, the prize & also listening to someone who is having a hard day. There are so many paths!

No one does it better than someone else; they just do it different.

And isn’t that wonderful? It would be pretty boring if we were all the same.

Which one are you? Pantser? Plotter? Somewhere in between?

I’m definitely in between . ✨🥂

With my current WIP, once I had the premise, many of the key beats flooded in.

It started with Dark Night of the Soul, followed quickly by the midpoint and the bad guys close in. Then I could picture the ending. BUT, some of my favorite scenes are ones I didn’t foresee or conversations between characters that the characters themselves wanted to have.

The spontaneity, creativity and inventiveness that happens during the first draft is a part of the process that I enjoy so much.

What does your writing process look like? What part of the story do you usually envision first?

In education we talk about productive struggle; we talk about challenging ourselves and how failure and error are opportunities for growth.

No one knows this better than a writer trying to become traditionally published.

I’ve been sitting on this video, because I know it shows a real point of data in my querying journey. I had written a query letter every day for three months trying to improve and finally I had irrefutable proof that something I did worked.

Not only that, but it’s so important to live what you preach. For my students to see me trying to accomplish something difficult and to share that journey with them, it helps them do the same.

I don’t talk about what it looks like to be a teacher in my bio in my query letter. I don’t explain how I’ve been teaching for 16 years and if my book was published today, kids—-now adults around 32—-who I taught way back in 2010 would be running to the store to buy it. I don’t explain how I’ve been so lucky to be a part of so many communities both online and in the real world.

For the first time querying, I feel incredibly lucky with what I’ve accomplished so far. I’m willing to share anything about my journey to help others succeed—that’s the teacher in me. I know I’ll continue in that vein once agented as well. I believe in making the best, most reliable resources widespread for others.
