Early Season Porgy Fishing in Peconic Bay
Early May marks the exciting kickoff for porgy (scup) fishing in Peconic Bay, Long Island's premier inshore hotspot. As water temps rise into the 50s°F, schools of plump, hungry porgies migrate in from deeper waters, often delivering some of the season's biggest fish—17 inch + “hubcaps” are common.
The NYSDEC season opens May 1st. Fish need to be at least 11" in length to keep, with a 30-fish per angler bag limit.
Why Early Season Rocks
Porgies arrive post-spawn, aggressive and feeding heavily. Action is fast once you find them, with double hookups routine on light tackle. Bycatch can include black sea bass (out of season), weakfish, fluke or striped bass. The action is fast
Simple Setup & Techniques
A classic high-low rig with clam or squid bait is all that is needed. We keep the boat stationary with the trolling motor and chum to concentrate the fish right under the boat.

Booking Your Trip
It takes about 40 minutes to reach my favorite “honey hole”. We sail through the Shinnecock Canal to reach the Peconic Bay. It is a scenic trip with many landmarks. Of course, the return leg is also 40 minutes. I recommend booking a half-day charter in order to leave some time to go after striped bass in the rips near the porgy spot.
