Let’s talk about spay-abort.
It’s uncomfortable. It’s emotional. And it is an incredibly important part of animal rescue.
Until you do this work, it is hard to understand the scale of what we are facing.
Until you’ve held a dying kitten in your hands while doing everything you possibly can to keep them alive. Until you’ve watched an exhausted mother try to nurse a litter while her own body is depleted. Until you’ve gotten the message about a litter of kittens needing somewhere to go while every foster home you have is already full. Until you’ve had to say no because there is quite literally nowhere left to SAFELY AND RESPONSIBLY put another cat. Until you’ve watched kittens be born outside only to die from infection, parasites, starvation, predators, weather, or disease. You don’t fully see it.
We cannot adopt our way out of this crisis. Period.
There are simply too many cats being born and not enough homes, fosters, rescuers, veterinary resources, or money to keep up. That is why we support spay-abort.
A spay-abort is exactly what it sounds like: a pregnant cat is spayed, which also ends the pregnancy. And yes, we understand why that makes people uncomfortable. We don't expect everyone to hear about it for the first time and immediately feel okay about it.
But rescue has taught us that preventing a litter from being born can mean preventing suffering while also protecting the cat who is already here. Every litter prevented means fewer kittens competing for already-limited homes. Fewer kittens entering an overwhelmed shelter and rescue system. Fewer kittens being born outside. Fewer sick neonates requiring around-the-clock care. And one female cat who can no longer continue the cycle of pregnancy after pregnancy.
And when resources are finite, those resources can instead go toward the animals who are already here and desperately need us.
Spay-abort isn't something we WANT to do it's something we HAVE to do. We support it because we see what happens when there are more lives than our community has the resources to save.
If we want fewer kittens suffering, fewer cats euthanized for lack of space, fewer overwhelmed rescues and fewer community cats struggling to survive, we have to address the source.
