Design inspiration from the Montréal Botanical Garden! As we expand our moss empire and begin consulting on larger, more elaborate gardens and landscape designs, our team has been craving more exposure, education, and inspiration

So naturally, we drove north to visit our neighbors in Montréal and spent the day exploring the Montréal Botanical Garden🌿

We explored Japanese, Chinese, aquatic, bonsai, and shade gardens. The aquatic gardens were abundant with liverworts, while the Japanese and Chinese gardens used moss-like groundcovers such as Irish moss and sedum to create soft, sculptural mounds. In the shade gardens, true mosses inevitably appeared between pavers and across weathered surfaces.

The aquatic gardens featured some incredible liverworts!

Even where moss wasn’t intentionally centered, its essence was everywhere: softness, age, texture, restraint, the feeling that the garden had grown into itself.

Although moss wasn’t featured on a massive scale, the mosses that were present demonstrated one of the most important elements of a well-designed garden—something that cannot be manufactured or rushed: the magic that ✨ time ✨ provides.

We worked with a landscape designer to transform a boring old tree stump into a lively focal point in this garden!

Stumps host a plethora of life, but they don’t always live up to our beauty standards in the garden. Rather than remove it, we’ve chosen to add more life to it!

Start your dream garden! We specialize in beautifying and enriching landscapes with native mosses. We know our moss species and their habitats well, and we guide you on everything from design and species selection, to planting and maintenance.

Many people don’t know that moss landscapes are an option, but for so many unique garden and landscaping projects, moss is the perfect low maintenance ground cover.

We’re making this experimental moss nursery & research garden to get to know mosses even deeper, and share the struggles and joys! This video goes over various mosses that have gone brown, the reasons why, and what I did to nurse them back to health in our new moss rehab!

I’m Olivia, the ✨moss specialist✨ I woke up this morning and felt the magic and wanted to talk about moss. What moss questions do you have? What are you curious about? 😃🌱

We’re making a mossery! Our moss nursery is an experimental woodland moss garden for testing different species in varied light conditions. It’s also an area to cultivate and propagate mosses, and a rehabilitation zone for mosses that need some TLC. We plan to continue expanding and improving it to make it a place for educational content and demonstrations. It needs labels, dedicated zones, more GIANT PILLOWS OF MOOD MOSS, and what else should the mossery have?

What if wilderness was a sign of wealth? Symbiosis a sign of status?

Project Habitat is about recognizing the cultural and ecological impacts of dominant landscaping norms, and changing them from the inside.

The U.S. landscaping industry accounts for hundreds of billions of dollars, and millions of acres of land, and based on our consultations, homeowners and landscapers are ready for a change.

Comment HABITAT to learn more about our experiment and join our growing community of habitat-makers 🐿️🌳
