This Saturday! Stompbox Sonic is happening in Sommerville, MA at Arts in The Armory. Stompbox Sonic

We debuted our new drive pedal, called the RECEIVER, which we developed with our good friend Ryan Argonaut Guitar Components in late 2025. We sold some to local clients and everyone has responded with great endorsements!

The pedal is based on classic 70’s single transistor overdrives, with 2 different clipping options accessed directly on the Right footswitch. When the Red LED is on, it’s LED clipping. When the Blue LED is on, it’s Diode clipping.

VOLUME = Volume...COLOR = Tone…INTENSITY = Gain
ENGAGE/BYPASS = On/Off… CLIPPING 1/2 = Diode or LED
 Each channel also runs through a boost circuit so that the levels of each style can be dialed in. We do this adjustment in house to our liking. The LED side inherently has a slight bump in volume and body that allows you to switch to that side for a solo or just a change in character. I’ve been changing channels when I switch guitars during our set to balance the output. Thanks a million to Ryan for the collaboration journey and Obscura MFG for the awesome work on the enclosures.

We will have 6 of them available at the show on Saturday. After that we will be working on dialing in the packaging, instructions, and demos, and then we’ll open up for orders. Hope to see you in Boston!

I just wrapped up the first 28” scale Baritone Growler and it came out grand. This one is for our new friend Josh M Josh Milan who we met through our old friend Ernie Jackson Ernie Jackson Ernie has the very first Baritone I made while attending Roberto-Venn and Josh got to play it and fell head over heels! I’ll write more about Ernie and that guitar soon.

As much as I am proud of my work from 25 years ago, I didn’t want to revisit the same body shape as it really doesn’t represent what we do now. I also didn’t have templates from the old days! Thankfully Josh was willing to go with the Growler shape. I always thought the combination of materials was really key to the bass response and feel of the original guitar, so I stuck with a chambered Mahogany body, Maple top, Maple neck and Ebony fretboard (this time Macassar Ebony but close enough). The pickup combination was unique too, and I have no memory of why I chose a Firebird Bridge and Telecaster neck back then but the pickups work great for the low end, and the bridge gives the twang you’d hope for to cut through a mix. We chose Lollar Pickups for what I think of as their Hi-Fi qualities. They’re very touch responsive and paired with Vintage Inspired Pickups 280k pots they just have a great wide spectrum of tones.

I used a Hipshot bridge because the plate is a taller 0.175” so I could keep the neck angle closer to our standard set-neck pitch. The neck is big, and with a 1 3/4” nut width there’s room for the heavier strings and the taper of the fretboard feels less pronounced, something Josh had responded to on the original guitar. We also used Hipshot locking tuners. The 28” scale is tuned to B-b with D’Addario 13-62 strings. The standard 25.5” scale Growler joins the body at the 21st fret, but I wanted to make sure we had a larger tenon to withstand the string tension and balance well, so I moved the joint to the 20th fret and lengthened the joint. The whole instrument is bound with Ivoroid, sprayed with a Champagne Sparkle Metallic lacquer, and has a gloss clear coat throughout. We used 95x45 fretwire and a 10-12” compound radius fretboard. I al

This Healer is for our friend Steve M. Who’s been a repair client for a long time and most recently a business advisor here. When we started up this commission I really loved how he basically had the whole idea for it ready to go. A burst that never goes fully opaque, roasted woods, natural head cap, Tele bridge pickup paired with 2 Strat pickups and a push/pull pot to engage the neck and bridge. Chopped tele bridge, string through the body, combine the things he loves about a Strat and a Tele. Tortoise guard, neck shaped like his favorite guitar. Done.

What else is there? Chambered Alder body, roasted maple neck with mineral stains that we love, quarter sawn roasted maple head cap, Indian rosewood fretboard, 95x47 fret wire, bone nut, Kluson Deluxe Safe-T Post tuners, 11-49 D’Addario Strings, VIP 280k pots, Forney electrosocket, Lollar pickups. 24 screws or so. Nitrocellulose lacquer. I’ve been doing this thing on the back of the neck which is fun too. You spray 3-4 coats of 60/40 Nitro/Thinner as a sealer, sand it level with a 320-400 grit pad and then apply 1-3 coats of TrueOil as needed. You want very little oil on the pad/towel, it’s more like a French polish style thing. Give it a go!

These two Healers really came about because of a photograph in the book Rickenbacker Guitars: Out of the Frying Pan and into the Fireglo that came out in 2021. I started flipping through and quickly came upon a photo of a 1961 4000 series Natural bass that just floored me. The all maple body and neck just seemed to pop more with the addition of the gold lucite pick guard instead of the now standard white acrylic. On the next page was the Fireglo with the gold guard, and more on the following pages, gold guards everywhere. The first guitar I bought for myself after graduating high school was a Rickenbacker 330, so the maple thing was always lurking somewhere in my brain. But the gold just started creeping into my world after this book.

In 2025 I was planning some guitars for Wood Wire Volts and I knew I had time to work out the all maple Natural one. Nearly all of our guitars are chambered, and these are no exception. Even chambered we’re still looking at a fairly standard solid body weight all said and done, around 8-8.75 lbs. I’d say they perform like a solid body, with some little extra kick unplugged, much like a Ric 330, especially with the and bridge.

The icing on the cake for me were the Higher Gain pickups. Rob Banta has made us some of the coolest pickups over the years, but these are next level. So clear, so full, super loud. They really push an amp into break-up like a humbucker cuz they’re HOT single coils with some secret Space Viking magic inside.

As for the Sunburst, I knew it had to have binding and wanted to hear the contrast of maple with a string through bridge. I wasn’t quite brave enough to do the checker binding but the cream edge gives enough contrast to achieve what I was after. The tone is super solid and has great sustain with the chopped tele bridge.

So it turns out we haven’t been receiving any emails from our website contact form for a couple of months. This Healer was made for our friend Ben D. in 2023. Ben is mainly an acoustic guitar player and his only requests were that there were no fretboard dots and that the neck was more like a vintage tele. We’d recently acquired a nice piece of Brazilian rosewood from a local furniture restoration shop and it fit the bill nicely for this fretboard and head cap. It’s a lovely dark brown with hints of orange in the right light.

I kept the sunburst in that mystery realm of brownish red, a lot like the warmer hues of fall foliage, and a narrow band with the end grain still visible. The top is reclaimed Douglas Fir from a beam that once lived at Mass MoCA, formerly the Sprague Electric Company, in North Adams, MA. With super straight grain it would be at home with Ben’s acoustic guitar tops. The original site of 87 Marshall St. in North Adams housed a print shop in 1860, so we’re talking about some very old which was likely several hundred years old when cut over 100 years ago.

The body core is Roasted Pine, chambered to give it a little more volume and attack when played unplugged. The neck is rift sawn Roasted Maple with some cool dark lines as well and a bit of flame.

The pick guard is cream acrylic and the bridge is a Rutters chopped tele style string through. Forney brass string ferrules and electro socket jack cup and Kluson safe-T post tuners. 95 x 47 Jescar fretwire, 1 5/8” nut width, 10” radius. Satin water based finish Emtech 6000.

The pickups A90’s are made by Ohad of . We tumbled the pickup rings (and the rest of the hardware) before assembling them. 42 gauge plain enamel wire and Alnico 5 Magnets. They are very lively and dynamic single coils. We originally found this silver mesh upstairs in legendary free piles of hallways where our shop is located. Every now and again someone will move out and leave the most amazing boxes of treasure.

We had an awesome surprise visit from who wanted to try her 5 string violin through our new gain pedal. Things really start to hit about 30 seconds in. The chords sound absolutely incredible! We also had the distinct pleasure of handing her a Healer, the first electric guitar she’d ever played :). Many thanks to Will for stopping by and introducing us to Sophie before their show at the Iron Horse last night. Make sure to follow both of them to see more awesome playing and instrument work. The pedal is called the Receiver, made with our friend Ryan and we’ll talk more about it soon.

Here’s the Growler that I made before Open Studio’s back in November. I’ve had a board of Spalted Red Maple around for a few years and was patiently waiting for it to air dry. I picked a few of the best sections to make the neck and top and got right into re-sawing it for what turned out to be a pretty stellar bookmatched top. The neck has the straightest grain of the entire 9ft board.

Growler necks now have a scarf joint that starts under the transition to the neck and extends nearly half way through the length of the headstock. You can see it a little more clearly with this maple more than in mahogany. This layout avoids the hard line you can sometimes see in a traditional scarf joint, giving the back of the headstock a more unified, clean look in my opinion. The longer joint and increased material under the nut should also allow for a stronger headstock.

The Safe-T Post Kluson Deluxe tuners increase the break angle of the strings over the nut as well, which compensates for the lower headstock angle. I used Macassar Ebony for the fretboard and head cap with Mother of Pearl inlays. The body is chambered Mahogany with ivoroid binding around the top. This is the most transparent burst I’ve pulled off to date, drawing inspiration from vintage Kay’s and Silvertone’s. The dark tortoise guard, pickup rings, and backplates contrast nicely with all the parts.

25.5” scale, 10” radius fretboard, 1.625” nut, 104 x 47 Jescar fretwire. 550k pots, Lollartron’s (best humbucker ever?) Black teacup k***s play off the black lines of the salting. Mojave wraparound with 1” threaded bushings. Thin satin nitrocellulose lacquer, open pore style.

This one went home with my friend and long time client a few days after the event. Matt had a 2018 Growler for a while that now lives with Luke from and I’m glad he found this one. He’s been making a new record with it down at too.
