Did you know that some of the most important books of the Victorian era were never intended for the general public?

Because of nineteenth-century obscenity laws in England, Sir Richard Francis Burton published The Book of the Thousand Nights and a Night through a private subscription society known as The Burton Club. These books were printed for members only and never offered through ordinary commercial channels.

What we have here at Salvage Goods is a complete Benares Edition, numbered 312 of only 1,000 produced.

Collectors often seek out the Benares Edition because it remains closest to the original Burton Club publication period, preserving the character of the early subscriber editions with original cloth bindings, paper spine labels, gilt top edges, and untrimmed deckled pages.

Over the last several days, we’ve carefully examined and researched this set volume by volume. We found matching limitation numbers throughout all sixteen volumes, original bindings, original labels, and remarkably clean interiors for books approaching 140 years of age.

Perhaps most interesting of all, while researching this collection we located other Burton Club editions, including Mecca Editions, but were unable to locate another complete matching Benares Edition set currently being offered.

Nearly 140 years later, all sixteen volumes remain together.

Nearly 35 years old and still looking pretty good if you ask me.

One of the things I love about the Cruiser 45 is that it can be used two ways. Carry it open like I’m holding it here, or fold the top down and use it more like a traditional luggage piece.

The canvas is strong, the leather has aged beautifully, and it still has a lot of life left in it.

Use it as a carry-on, a weekend travel bag, or let it become part of a collection. I’ve even seen pieces like this used as decorative storage in a dressing room, closet, or office.

Collectors of vintage Louis Vuitton know exactly what this is. These older travel pieces represent Louis Vuitton’s roots as a luggage maker, and they’re becoming harder to find with each passing year.

Every bag that comes into the shop gets handled, inspected, researched, and judged on its own merits.

Built in the Terada workshop in Nagoya — Gretsch’s flagship Japanese plant since the 1980s — this Purple Sparkle Hot Rod was assembled to Brian Setzer’s exact specifications. The 5-ply laminated maple body uses 1959-style trestle bracing for cutting projection, an ebony fingerboard for snap, and a pair of TV Jones Brian Setzer Signature Filter’Tron pickups wired through a stripped-down single-volume circuit — Setzer’s preferred setup since the Stray Cats years. The Bigsby B6 tailpiece and locking tuners keep the dive-bombs in tune.

Pulled this out of a buy last week and stopped working for the day.

H. Gerstner & Sons, Dayton, Ohio. The Rolls-Royce of wooden tool chests since 1906 — still family-owned, still hand-built in the same factory.

11 drawers. Quarter-sawn tiger oak. Diamond mirror in the lid. Hand-cut dovetails. Original green wool felt. Original wrapped handle. Original everything.

The lock plate is stamped “H. Gerstner & Sons / Dayton, O.” The factory stencil inside reads “Built by H. Gerstner & Sons / Dayton, Ohio.” Key code A50M22 — Gerstner still cuts replacement keys for $20 because the company hasn’t changed.

A new one of these from Gerstner today costs $1,600+.

Originally built for machinists. Now it’s a perfect home for watches, knives, jewelry, fountain pens, fly-tying kits, art supplies, or anything else you want to protect and pass down.
