A Frontier Airlines flight on a domestic eastern U.S. route diverted to McGhee Tyson Airport in Knoxville (TYS), leaving passengers stranded overnight.

The diversion occurred late evening, exhausting same-day recovery options. Passengers reported extended terminal waits while attempting rebooking, sourcing hotel rooms, and arranging ground transport — in many cases at their own expense.

Under U.S. regulations, ULCCs are generally not required to provide hotel accommodations or meal vouchers when disruptions stem from weather or certain operational factors.

For crew operating into TYS, the airport's limited late-night staffing and reduced departure frequency compress the recovery window significantly.

This follows a Frontier Sacramento-to-Denver service that diverted to Grand Junction in August and a Dallas-to-San Francisco cancellation in late July — both involving extended waits and limited accommodation support.

Every newly manufactured passenger aircraft must now be equipped with an installed physical secondary barrier (IPSB) to protect the flight deck when the flight deck door is opened in flight, with very limited exceptions.

The Air Line Pilots Association, Int'l is calling on airlines and manufacturers to go further and retrofit secondary barriers onto aircraft already in service.

ALPA president Capt. Jason Ambrosi said secondary barriers on new aircraft are now the law of the land, and noted that airlines and manufacturers pushed back deadlines for decades. The FAA has granted very limited exemptions, and last month denied a Regional Airline Association petition seeking an exemption for Embraer 170/175 aircraft after determining the certification issues cited had already been addressed.

ALPA is asking the FAA to issue rulemaking requiring airlines to retrofit the in-service fleet with secondary flight deck barriers.

The requirement has been more than two decades in development: FAA required reinforced flight deck doors in 2002; two major airlines voluntarily installed secondary barriers in 2003; industry design guidance followed in 2011; the FAA formally acknowledged their effectiveness in 2015; Congress mandated them in the 2018 FAA Reauthorization Act; the FAA issued a final rule in 2023 with an August 2025 implementation date; and in 2025 the FAA announced a one-year delay.

According to IBA's Fleet Asset Report, more than 150 newly manufactured aircraft equipped with secondary barriers are expected to be delivered to U.S. airlines before the end of 2026, with hundreds more joining fleets each year through the end of the decade.

ALPA represents more than 80,000 pilots at 42 U.S. and Canadian airlines.

United Airlines Update:

An internal memo obtained by Live and Let's Fly indicated United agents were being directed to offer free rebooking to passengers who object to flying into the newly renamed Donald J. Trump International Airport in West Palm Beach (PBI), with Fort Lauderdale (FLL) and Miami (MIA) offered as alternatives.

United has since walked back the memo, telling Moneywise it was "poorly worded and not accurate."

"United customers are able to make changes to a ticket without a fee for many reasons. However, our policy doesn't allow for changes because of an airport's name or three letter code," the airline said.

Palm Beach International was renamed Donald J. Trump International Airport by Florida state legislation. No airport has previously been named after a sitting U.S. president.
