The Coop Times:
One broody hen has taken up residence in the “favorite” nesting box. This event has lead to chickens refusing to use the other 5 available nest boxes and instead borrowing duck nests on the floor. I have yet to install a suggestion box to find a solution to this protest.
We currently have no roosters, which almost no chicken keeper ever says. We do however have drakes and hen ducks. Therefore to appease the broody hen she was gifted 4 duck eggs which will hopefully hatch into babies, instead of the infertile chicken eggs exploding into a grotesque, foul smelling mess.
Ducks are easily herded in the evening. I’ve been pondering that if you need more drama in your life and you’re looking for feathered friends I recommend chickens. They will escape, get stuck in strange places, p**p in places they have been told not too, lay eggs in secret locations and in large amounts after they have escaped, start chaos with any or all of your other pets, try to maim your children when they aren’t looking, try to maim you while your back is turned, rip each others feathers out, peck you, chase you growling and flapping, sneak into your garden and eat your cabbages, destroy your baby plants in your garden, scratch every inch of anything green, become infested with fowl mites so that you have to bathe them individually, (wet chickens are quite hilarious), please add if I missed anything…
Ducks on the other wing, are just kinda noisy and messy. They can be pretty easily herded, watching them splash in water inspires joy and smiles, they do have projectile liquid p**p, but you can put it right on your garden.
For me I like them both, our mix of ducks lay heavy in the spring and our chickens seem to lay right thru winter.
If you need some of the most swell eggs this side of the Mississippi you’re in the right place. Organic fed and free range puddle splashing garage surprise laying birds.
