Here's what Olivia read in July:
Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen
If the Moon by Matthew Burgess
Berlin Atomized by Julia Kornberg
Heartstopper: Volume 6 by Alice Oseman
And Olivia's thoughts:
While If the Moon did not put me to sleep, it did soothe my imagination with the dream-like illustrations of Matthew Forsythe. Wrapping you in a patchwork quilt of downy soft prose and warm imagery, If the Moon is a delightfully lyrical and hypnotic bedtime adventure, whose close cousin would be the well known Goodnight Moon.
If you are a lover of illustration, the artistry of bookmaking, or just would like a little one to go to bed, this drowsy reader would highly recommend this book.
Not much can be said again, or rewritten about Pride & Prejudice, however, I can give opinions on it as my second experience of Austen’s work. Having started off with Northanger Abbey, my thoughts on these heroine novels focus more on their humor and self-referential aspects. But, I have to say, having seen Colin Firth emerge from that lake, this book provides you with so much more context and depth to the story of Elizabeth Bennett and her sisters.
I enjoyed learning, or realizing, how much yearning on the part of Darcy can be embedded in just two hundred and fifty pages. Whether you enjoy the classics or not, I believe that every type of reader can find something to enjoy, analyze, and experience in this very impactful piece of literature.
Wanna know what the life of a depressed Argentine latchkey kid is like? If you do, then, I’d recommend Berlin Atomized. Following the lives and eventual deaths of a group of siblings raised in the outer suburbs of Buenos Aires, this book examines, economic destruction, youth punk scenes, and domestic terrorism. It’s been a while since the ending of a book made me quite so annoyed, but props to the author for making me feel something.
A beautiful end to a beautiful series. If you think I wasn’t crying when I turned that last page, you’re dead wrong. Alice Osman’s Heartstopper series first began in 2018 and now it has seen it’s final chapter. This book offers an audience a q***r love story full of hope, belonging, and joy.
