Over the last several months, I've watched many small businesses in our community struggle, with some closing their doors for good. None of us are immune to the economic challenges we're facing right now. As your wallet gets a little lighter with rising bills at the gas pump and the grocery store, our operating costs go up too, meaning prices in independent shops, restaurants, and local service providers have to adjust as well.
I can't speak for every small business, but I know many of us got into this work because we love what we do AND we love our community fiercely. Turtle & Bea has been open for nearly two years, and in those 22 months, we have had the absolute privilege of donating just shy of 4,000 books and over $10,000 worth of prizes, donations, and raffle items back into our community.
We are only able to give back like that, and keep our doors open day after day, because our community chooses to come to us instead of defaulting to online giants or big-box stores. Because you trust us to host your events and celebrate life's moments, big and small, with a custom gift basket or the perfect book recommendation. Because you become a sustaining member and ensure we can keep the lights on, month after month.
We know you can spend your hard-earned money anywhere, and we are incredibly grateful every time you choose to spend it with us.
As you think about your next purchase, your next meal, or your next service provider, please consider shopping local and supporting your neighbors.
If your budget is tight right now, here are a few other powerful ways you can support us and fellow small businesses:
1. Make a post about your favorite local spots and share it with your network! Word of mouth is still the absolute best way to get new patrons through the door.
2. If a local business supports your event, makes a donation, or helps out your organization, be sure to publicly thank them on social media or in a newsletter. Sending a handwritten note means the world, too! I know I love receiving them and hanging them right on our bulletin board for everyone to see!
3. When you need something specific and you're not sure if a local business can meet your needs, ASK. We would love the opportunity to source it for you, and if we truly can't, we almost certainly know another local business owner who is just what you're looking for.
Thank you for being the heart of this community. We wouldn't be here without you.
