I may not be as big as my more well known counterparts, but my unusual coloring makes up for my smaller size. My reddish orange blooms with brown undertones and a yellow throat bring something a little unexpected to the garden and invite a closer look.

Something else delightful about me is that I’m not a biennial like many other foxgloves. I’m a perennial and, given a sunny spot with well drained soil, I can reward you with blooms more than once during the growing season. My smaller stature also makes me easy to tuck into the garden where my unusual flowers can really be enjoyed.

Sunset Foxglove (Digitalis obscura)

Height: 18 to 24 in
Spacing: 12 to 18 in

“There is something infinitely healing in the repeated refrains of nature—the assurance that dawn comes after night, and spring after winter.”
— Rachel Carson

The garden has a way of reminding us that change is always part of growing. Some seasons ask us to hold on, while others gently teach us to let go and trust what comes next.

As a new week unfolds, there is comfort in the familiar rhythms of the garden, in watching things grow and change, and in knowing there is still beauty to be found along the way🌼🐦

I’m a culinary treat with many flavors to choose from, but there’s more to me than what I bring to the kitchen. I love the heat and really take off once the warm days of summer arrive. Keep cutting me and I’ll continue branching, giving you plenty to enjoy throughout the season.

Did you know I’m also wonderful in arrangements? My fragrant stems add beautiful foliage and texture to a bouquet. I can be a little prone to sulking after I’m cut, but there’s an easy way to make me happy. Cut me very early in the day and let me sit in cool water for a few hours to condition before you begin arranging with me.

“Not the sun or the summer alone, but every hour and season yields its tribute of delight.”
— Ralph Waldo Emerson

The cooler mornings have been a welcome change after so much summer heat. The garden seems to appreciate the little break too, and it is a good reminder that there is something to enjoy in every shift of the season.

Here’s to a new week, a little cooler and cleaner air, and taking time to enjoy the garden while summer is still very much with us.

I'm running a little behind this week, but with some much more desirable weather ahead, I thought I'd share one of my favorite flower care tips.

With the heat of summer comes many favorite flowers, including rudbeckia, zinnias, marigolds, and sunflowers. These are often called "dirty flowers" because they cloud vase water more quickly than many other blooms.

Keeping the water clean makes all the difference in extending their vase life. While there are many commercial flower food products available today, gardeners found ways to enjoy longer lasting bouquets long before they existed.

Here's the simple recipe that has been passed down through my family:

🌿 1 quart of water
🌿 1 teaspoon sugar
🌿 2 teaspoons white vinegar
🌿 1 drop of bleach (just one drop, not a splash!)

To help your bouquets last even longer, remember to change the water regularly, give the stems a fresh trim every few days, and harvest flowers during the cool of the morning or evening whenever possible. A little extra care goes a long way toward keeping your flowers looking their best.

I may not have the largest blooms in the garden, but few flowers bloom as generously as I do. My branching stems fill with cheerful golden yellow blooms that seem to keep coming all summer long, bringing a natural look to the garden.

I'm a favorite of bees and butterflies, and hummingbirds often stop to perch on my sturdy stems while they visit the garden. I'll reward you with months of color while many other flowers begin to fade. My long stems are wonderful for bouquets, adding movement and a touch of sunshine to every arrangement.

Brown Eyed Susan (Rudbeckia triloba)
Plant Type: short lived perennial
Height: 48 to 60 in (in the right spot, I can even reach 8 ft!)
Spacing: 18 to 24 in
Sun: Full
Bloom Habit: Multi Progression

My grandfather loved roses. At a young age, I knew roses were special to him. He loved golf too and us grandkids learned day 1 to never hit golf balls into the roses.

I have a very early memory of one particular rose. I'd chipped a ball into it. Luckily, I didn't damage it. I remember grandpa sharing if I did damage it where he'd cut to rejuvenate the stem.

My lovely friend has a very similar looking rose. She rooted a cutting for me this past fall. I had long forgotten about this memory until I saw hers bloom the first time which brought a tear instantly.

I love how plants can evoke memories while also creating new ones.

Thank you to my friend Maggie for this amazing gift 🌹

The first bud cracked on my birthday the other day too. What a special treat.

"There is a garden in every childhood, an enchanted place, where colors are brighter, the air is softer, and the morning more fragrant than ever again." — Elizabeth Lawrence

My daughter leaves for college in under three weeks. I appreciate how much the garden has connected us. The sunflowers we planted together will bloom after she is gone. Gardens are a beautiful thing. I'm grateful for qhat will soon be a transitional garden for a special time 🌻

I come from a large family of mints, but unlike many of my relatives, I'm well behaved in the garden, growing in tidy clumps rather than taking over. My soft lavender blooms have a relaxed, airy look that feels right at home in cottage gardens, native plantings, and natural landscapes.

My fragrant foliage and nectar rich blooms draw bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, and many other beneficial pollinators throughout the summer. As a North American native, I bring natural beauty to the garden and add an airy texture to bouquets with my unique shape and soft color.

Wild Bergamot (Monarda fistulosa)
Plant Type: Perennial
Height: 24 to 48 in
Spacing: 18 to 24 in
Sun: Full to Part Sun
Bloom Habit: Multi Progression

Plant me in spring and enjoy years of beautiful summer blooms.

“Every morning was a cheerful invitation to make my life of equal simplicity, and I may say innocence, with Nature herself.”
— Henry David Thoreau

May you find a little time this week to enjoy the warmth, notice what is blooming, and appreciate the simple beauty growing around you.
