This morning, I was reading Isaiah 40, my go to passage when seeking God's will, especially in difficult circumstances. Then, I read on into chapter 41. I've read it many times. I've even taught it to others. When I got to vv. 8-10 "But you, Israel, my servant, Jacob, whom I have chosen, the offspring of Abraham, my friend; you whom I took from the ends of the earth, and called from its farthest corners, saying to you, “You are my servant, I have chosen you and not cast you off”; fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."... I saw it in light of current circumstances. It practically jumped off the page! This morning, God reminded me of 3 things:
1. I am chosen by God.
2. I have been promised God's divine presence.
3. I have been promised strength and help through hardship.
This has been quite liberating today. God's reminders today give me a different perspective. Knowing that I am called, that I have the promise of God's presence, and will be strengthened through hardship is a comforting thought for every believer to hold on to.

Back in the early 90’s, I was serving as a youth minister in Del City. We had a very active youth group, a great youth choir, and lots of students involved. One fall, we had a revival where the evangelist preached a number of great sermons challenging the church and encouraging the lost to come to faith in Christ. During our “youth night”, the evangelist preached a sermon entitled, “There Is a God. You Are Not Him!” That title was quite thought provoking in and of itself. The message was all about the powerful, almighty, all-knowing, omni-present God of the universe. It was about how God created man in His image, and His desire is for us to enter into relationship with Him. He wants us to acknowledge His Lordship and know our place in His Kingdom.

Could it be that, in this modern era in which we live, people (even Christian people) have lost sight of just who God really is and what He is capable of? There is nothing too difficult for Him. There is nothing that “surprises” Him. He has already met our every need before we even know we have a need. That, my friends, is the God whom we serve!

“The Hound of Heaven” is a poem by Francis Thompson, first published in 1890. This poem is about how God pursues the human soul like a bloodhound would pursue a hare. As the story goes, God pursues us and will not retreat until we are safe in His care. He is, indeed, in hot pursuit of our souls. But God’s pursuit is to protect us and not to destroy.

A preacher, and very dear friend of mine, speaks of “The Hound of Heaven” in many of his sermons and conversations. Every time I hear the phrase, “The Hound of Heaven,” I am reminded of how God pursued my soul, until I trusted in Christ. And now, He still pursues me to stay close to Him and to obey His perfect will for my life.

Have you heard the howling? Have you heard the barking? Have you heard the sniffing? “The Hound of Heaven” is still in pursuit of us. His desire is that we walk with Him and trust in Him!

Remember and Repent

I felt the blast, The huge impact.
My mind was fast to learn the facts.

I tried to tell my children then
The heartless acts of sinful men.

Rebellion makes us learn to hate,
And walk the path that isn't straight.

"How can this be?" I asked the Lord.
And then I read it in His Word.

"For all have sinned and fallen short,"
Found guilty in the Father's court.

"That is why I sent my Son,
To right the wrongs that man has done.

His life He gave so you can know
My freedom as the blood did flow."

For sin, the sacrifice was made,
At greatest cost, yet Christ obeyed.

So we can enter through the blood
Grateful for that crimson flood.

When history repeats again
The shameless acts of sinful men,

Then may our lives be daily spent
As we remember and repent.
