Today’s featured artist is Michael Smith, who is based in Kansas City, MO.

“For the past forty years I have worked as a potter,
producing a diverse line of functional stoneware and porcelain.

I started with a four year apprenticeship, the traditional method for learning the potter’s art.
In that setting, I learned basic technique, discipline, endurance
and the skills for making a living as a potter.

Function is the starting point and context for my work.
My best work is completed through the act of its use.”

On this Featured Artist Friday we are featuring Susan Reynolds! She spends her summers in Jacksonport, WI and her winters in Florida.

“Reynolds’ work is primarily wheel-thrown but recently she branched out into hand-building. She begins with perfectly symmetrical pieces that provide the blank canvas on which to work. The rims, edges and surfaces are then altered with tools and brushes but mostly, with her hands. The “manipulated edge” pieces end up like her; imperfectly perfect.“

”Are those real leaves? Yes, we use real leaves on every piece of Kaleidoscope Pottery, and no leaf is ever re-used. What you see in the clay is only the impression made by the leaf. The leaf is always removed after being pressed into the clay.”

“Welcome to my colorful world - where I share with you my sense of belonging in the beautiful wild places of Wisconsin. Trained professionally as a biologist, my eye is drawn to light and shadow, patterns, lines, color and especially the “feel” of this land that sustains me. I hope my work takes you to a happy place and that you feel the joy that inspires me.”
