Fun facts according to some studies:
• Adults with ADHD are 3 to 5 times more likely to start businesses.
• ~30% of entrepreneurs have ADHD, and ~35% have dyslexia.
This makes perfect sense. When traditional systems don't fit, you eventually build your own.
Growing up, I constantly heard: "You have so much potential", "You're so smart, it shouldn't be this hard", "Stop being lazy," or "You need to apply yourself."
The truth is, I was trying really hard.
It wasn't until college, when I was 18, that I finally had someone sit down with me and explain everything on my elementary, middle, and high school IEPs.
I finally got answers: Dyscalculia and ADHD. (Back in the ‘90s, ADHD was widely misunderstood, and Dyscalculia was just labeled a "Specific Learning Disability in Math").
My struggles were never about laziness. My brain just processes information differently: patterns, images, and connections. It's like a GUI system in a CLI world. I spent the beginning of my life as a square block trying to fit in a round hole.
Once I stopped forcing my brain to fit a mold that wasn't built for it, everything changed.
I didn't fix myself
I learned myself.
If you're giving it everything you have and still feel like you're missing something, you are not lazy, and you are not broken. You may just need to figure out how to navigate the world in a way that works specifically for you.
What things were said to you? Were you "gifted" in some departments and struggled in others?
