🕰️ THROWBACK THURSDAY - FOX PLAZA HISTORY: WHITE’S STORE — 1959

Take a trip back to 1959, when Fox Plaza Shopping Center was still brand new and becoming one of El Paso’s major shopping destinations!

On February 1, 1959, White Stores, Inc. opened a White’s store at Fox Plaza Shopping Center, joining other businesses that helped establish the new center at Hawkins & Alameda.

The first photo is a White’s advertisement from September 17, 1959, promoting a big “Store Manager’s Sale.” White’s carried an interesting mix of merchandise—from automotive batteries, motor oil and mufflers to blankets, luggage, bicycles, appliances, sporting goods and even auto seat covers. The advertisement lists two El Paso locations: Downtown at 322 Texas Ave. and Fox Plaza at Hawkins & Alameda.

And check out some of those 1959 prices! A full-size Texas Ranger bicycle was $33.88, a four-player badminton set was $6.88, decorator pillows were 99¢ each, and White’s Supreme motor oil was only 27¢ a quart.

The second image gives us a great look at early Fox Plaza, showing Woolworth’s, White’s and Gunning Casteel along the shopping center. The caption proudly advertised Fox Plaza’s “Mammoth Parking Space,” saying the lot could accommodate more than 2,500 automobiles, with large lights for nighttime shopping and wide entrance and exit lanes.

These old advertisements and photographs provide a fascinating glimpse into the early days of Fox Plaza Shopping Center and how much shopping in El Paso has changed over the past 67 years.
