The Bureau of Alcohol, To***co, Fi****ms and Explosives (ATF) is considering an expansion of protections for firearm owners engaged in interstate transport. This initiative aims to accommodate typical travel necessities, including stops for refueling, dining, and overnight lodging, as well as transitions between various modes of transportation, such as en route to an airport.
ATF is proposing to clarify protections for the interstate transportation of fi****ms by lawful owners. The update would formally recognize that routine travel activities, such as overnight stops, refueling, vehicle maintenance, emergency stops, and medical needs, are part of lawful “transport” under the Fi****ms Owners’ Protection Act. It also updates rules for ammunition and accessories and clarifies secure storage requirements during transit.
