Somewhere on Interstate 40, a New Mexico patrolman reportedly chased down a Ferrari doing 169 mph in a genuine Plymouth Superbird. His radar only went to 150, but the Superbird kept gaining ground. After just seven miles of open desert, the Ferrari was caught.

The car had been confiscated by the state and quietly put into highway patrol service. Its NASCAR-inspired shape, huge rear wing, and powerful engine made it a very unusual police car. The legendary machine later became known as the “Blackbird.”

The original Blackbird was eventually sold and passed through several owners before its trail went cold. Today, a tribute built from a 1970 Plymouth Satellite keeps the wild story alive. It may be the closest most car lovers ever get to the real thing.

On a Wednesday night in December 1968, Jethro decided the family truck made the Clampetts look out of date, so he handed it to a customizer and drove back to the mansion in something else entirely. George Barris built it: Fire Red metalflake paint with yellow racing stripes, a 442 V8 pulled from a 1969 Oldsmobile, injector tubes poking through the hood, Cragar chrome wheels, four bucket seats under chrome roll bars, and a pair of drag chutes bolted to a hand-built wooden bed. Granny wanted no part of it. She got the mechanics to put the old jalopy back together, then raced him to settle which machine was better. She poured her own moonshine into the tank and won. That hot rod survived. It rolled across the auction block in Scottsdale in January 2025.
