This graphic novel actually comes with a personal recommendation from me. I read it as part of a reading challenge last year because graphic novel was a category (I don't usually read them).

It follows the story of Omar Mohamed, a Somalian refugee, as he seeks to leave the Dadaab camp in Kenya. The book provides amazing conversation opportunities to talk about the difficulties refugees face in camps and the rules about resettlement. I plan to offer this as a biographical choice in the English 101 class I'm teaching at our co-op.

Here are more books that fit into the various Sonlight curriculum cores, but there are so many great books that are part of the curriculum, making this a post for everyone!

My Father's Dragon is a household favorite. I don't even know how many times Ezra has listened to it.

And, The Year of Miss Agnes is a touching story about a teacher's influence on a rural Alaskan village.

Have any of you read the Heartwood Hotel series yet? I highly recommend it! The vocabulary is elevated without being too much for a read aloud, and gentle themes of kindness, loyalty, and perseverance are woven throughout.
