Kentucky hunters — don’t let September 30 sneak up on you!
Kentucky Fish & Wildlife’s main quota-hunt application period runs September 1–30, and there’s one detail that’s especially important if you’ve been building preference points:
You need to apply for a hunt OR select the “Do Not Hunt” option each year to keep your accumulated preference points.
Not drawn this year? Intentionally sitting this one out? KDFWR says applicants who are unsuccessful in the drawing — as well as hunters who select “Do Not Hunt” — are automatically awarded one preference point for that hunt species. Only one preference point can be earned per hunt species each year.
A few other things to know:
• Kentucky residents and nonresidents may apply for quota hunts.
• You may apply for quota hunts for multiple species during the application process.
• There is a nominal, non-refundable application fee.
• After the drawing, results are posted in your KDFWR My Profile account.
• If you’re drawn, you’ll still need the applicable hunting licenses and permits before the hunt.
The big takeaway: even if you aren’t planning to hunt a quota hunt this year, don’t assume you can simply skip the application process if you have preference points you want to protect.
📅 Deadline: September 30
