Dream Team or Mismatched Miasma? -- a Review of "Deadpool and Wolverine"

Twenty-four years ago, the X-Men first appeared on the big screen, introducing much of the world to the talent known as Hugh Jackman. Fifteen years ago, Wolverine had his own movie, for the first time. This movie introduced the movie going public to the "Merc with a mouth"...Deadpool. For the first time since 2009, these two are sharing substantial screen time together. Fans have been anxiously awaiting their full reunion, making "Deadpool and Wolverine" one of the most anticipated movie of the past ten years. This is especially true when you consider that this movie brings both of these fan favorites into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In true Deadpool fashion, the movie starts much like a roller coaster. (Specifically, cresting the first big hill). It will hardly surprise anyone that this film is loaded with action. It is a comic book movie, after all. The action is magnificently choreographed and filmed. These are some of the most exciting fight scenes to be a part of the MCU, and that's saying a lot.

However, fight scenes, while critical to this kind of film, do not make a movie on their own. A good story is vital, and it would hardly be a Deadpool movie, let alone an MCU film, without some laughs, and some serious moments. This film has all of those bases covered. It also features an extensive soundtrack, that uses its songs extremely well. Trust me, you'll never think of "Bye Bye Bye", by NSYNC, the same way.

The writing is sharp and beautifully executed. The cast features a lot of familiar faces, and a lot of surprising appearances. There has been a lot of speculation as to who all will be making cameo appearances in this movie. Well, it's not as many as you might think. This is because many of the surprise appearances are too much to be called merely a cameo. Especially fun was the presence of (*names redacted*) as (*characters redacted*). (As if I'd give out a spoiler like that. Shame on you!).

One of the best elements of the writing of this film was the fact that even though the film involves the TVA, from the series "Loki", there is sufficient exposition to make seeing "Loki", but not so much as to ruin the series for those who have not seen it.

Another sign of writing excellence is the fact that they constantly surprise you, even (or especially) with the things you think you know are going to happen. In fact, shouts of shock, approval, and satisfaction were audible in the theater (including from me).

The cast turns is some startlingly good performances. Hugh Jackman gives one of his better performances as Wolverine. Ryan Reynolds also gives a top-tier performance as Deadpool. Both of them delve into serious emotions, as well as the action and comedy aspects. Emma Corrin, playing Cassandra Nova, gives a remarkable performance, and maintains a truly captivating presence on the screen.

To be honest, I had a lot of expectations of this film, and I had them thoroughly exceeded. This film has magnificently blended the X-universe into the MCU. Many fans have been finding some of the more recent additions to the MCU to be a little lacking. While I do not share that sentiment (I liked "the Marvels", I don't care what anyone says) I will say that this film is going to be very good to the MCU, and could very well be an indicator of some of the things that we can look forward to in the MCU (if speculations and rumors have any validity).

This film does have and after-credit scene, but even better is a montage of behind-the-scenes clips of past movies, paying tribute to all of the Marvel movies released under the "Fox" Banner. There's even a very special inclusion that I won't spoil here.

Basically, this is a film that has no weaknesses, and is much more than the sum of its parts.

Third Spider-Man’s Third Movie, But Is the Third Time a Charm? – a Review of “Spider-Man: No Way Home”

Let me preface this review by stating that I have been a fan of Spider-Man for nearly 50 years. He is my favorite comic book hero. This means that while I will always be gratified to see him on the screen, I am somewhat critical of the character and the differences between the versions that appear on screen from those on the page. I have enjoyed every Spider-Man film that has been made before now, though to differing degrees. Now that you understand my perspective, let’s delve into this newest movie. Also, I hate spoilers, and will make sure that there are none in this review (although, I make no such promises about previous films nor to information revealed in previews).

This movie begins on the heels of “Spider-Man: Far From Home”, where a video was released to the world framing the wall-crawler for murder, and his identity being revealed to the entire world. Peter faces enormous difficulties as a result, and seeks help from fellow Avenger, Stephen Strange. This sets into motion a chain of events that lead Peter to face off against villains seen in previous films, of other Spider-Man. He then has to try to deal with the world knowing who he is, while simultaneously dealing with a collection of villains whom he has never seen, but have known Spider-Man.

This film is directed by Jon Watts, who has directed the previous two installments of Spider-Man’s films in the MCU (not to be confused with the Russo brothers, who directed the other MCU movies that featured Spider-Man). Watts has done a remarkable job with the series, but seems like he might be trying to compete with the Russo brothers, because this film is as action-packed, funny, and emotionally evocative as their MCU films.

“No Way Home” is an emotional roller coaster. Watching it was such a ride that after watching it, I am physically tired. Adrenaline, tears, and laughter all flowed, often in the same scenes. The writing was sharp and believable. Concepts shown include sacrifice, loss, triumph, love, and more redemption arcs than I can recall ever seeing in one project. There were numerous times when a character’s arrival in the film evoked cheers and applause from the audience.

The actors so embodied their characters, that it was easy to see them only as their characters, and forget that they were acting. In addition to Spider-Man veterans Tom Holland (Peter Parker / Spider-Man), Zendaya (MJ), Jacob Batalon (Ned Leeds), Marissa Tomei (May Parker), and Jon Favreau (Happy Hogan), the cast also includes Benedict Cumberbatch (Dr. Stephen Strange), JK Simmons (J. Jonah Jameson), Jamie Fox (Max Dillon / Electro), Alfred Molina (Dr. Otto Octavius / Doctor Octopus), Willem Dafoe (Norman Osborn / Green Goblin) and many more. Their acting was so outstanding, as an ensemble, that really, none of them stand out from the crowd.

Visually, it runs the gamut from the mundane to the bizarrely fantastic, and all of it feels completely normal (at least as normal as this kind of thing can feel normal). As bonuses, we get some revamps of the looks of some characters that bring the characters’ looks much more like their comic book versions than they previously were, particularly the Green Goblin and Electro. The theater in which I saw this film did not offer 3D, and I must admit that I actually regret that. While some MCU installments have delved somewhat into the “gratuitous” range of 3D, this movie had scenes that practically beg for the additional depth.

There have been a number of rumors and speculations about this movie, and I refuse to deny or confirm any of them. However, I will say that, in keeping with MCU traditions, there are a number of cameos that should bring a smile to the faces of fans. This film has been highly anticipated, and is breaking a number of box-office records, and I must say that this attention has been well-deserved, as this film is reasonably in contention for the title of the best MCU film yet.

Another MCU tradition that this movie honors is the post-credit scene. This film features a mid-credit scene and an after-credit scene. Both of which must be seen, and give insight into the future.

My Grade: A+
