One of the best things about succulents? You can create beautiful arrangements with what you already have! We used a mix of new plants and cuttings for this container. It’s a great way to save money and make use of leftovers from seasonal pruning.

Let those cuttings callus, tuck them into well-draining soil, give them plenty of bright light, and watch your little garden grow. ☀️🪴

Welcome back to where we like to share stories from the past 24 years of building our family’s nursery business.

We were talking about our online store in a meeting the other day and it took me back to the week that we built it. Remember March 2020 when it felt like the world came to a grinding halt? Well that’s the week we launched our online business.

On Tuesday, March 17 we heard that San Francisco had closed all its businesses and ordered its residents to shelter in place. We knew it was only a matter of time before Sacramento would face the same thing. So that night when we got home we created the online platform for our gift shop. Back at work the next day we spent all day photographing product. Then another all nighter getting the product up and listed. Up the next day on March 19 to do the same thing and sure enough we hear the news that Sacramento is ordered to lock down. Suddenly everything was new and unknown. From new protocols to unknown health fears to the financial implications of closing our business during our busiest season.

So we did what we do best when faced with a challenge. We put in the work and launched an online store that was filling orders for pickup the very next day. There was no time for a soft launch or even to work out the kinks. We figured we’d follow the adage of “fake it til you make it”😂 and hope for the best!

The staff was gone, the gates were locked, we held Facebook live events to show you our merchandise and the online sales helped us hold things together until we reopened. We turned all our workshops into “take home kits” and shot janky YouTube how-to videos. It was a crazy hectic time. And yet, what we remember most is how supportive you all were and how wonderful and restorative those conversations with customers at the gate were. 🥹

Today our online store offers local delivery and shipping along with the original pick up at the gate option😉. We encourage you to take a look and try it out, especially for shipping gifts through the holidays, or having live plants delivered locally in lieue of flowers.

Welcome back to , our weekly dive into some of the personal moments and projects from 24 years operating a small family business.

Today we’re remembering how Terra came to join the team and at the same time, honoring the one who never throws anything away. The one who, if you say “I need a piece of xyz for a project,” can disappear into his storage shed and come out with exactly what you need. This is the story of how that knack for saving everything is literally how Terra came to life.

Before The Secret Garden we owned a restaurant in East Sac. Terra’s foundation is a round metal table base saved from those restaurant days. Terra’s body is primarily made of left over chicken wire from when we built a chicken coop enclosure. Her bodice structure is from an old tabletop jewelry display piece. Her head is a damaged concrete head planter. Her clothing is made from bits and pieces of succulents from around the nursery.

Terra has been on display in the nursery for 5 years now and I think we can all agree, she just keeps getting better looking with age! What a beauty! She truly has now taken on a life of her own and has became so much more than the sum of her parts! 💚 She’s become a favorite spot for selfies in the nursery and does a great job showing guests what makes The Secret Garden unique among other Sacramento nurseries.

🍂 Fall is officially here… but apparently Summer didn’t get the memo. 😅☀️
If you’re looking for resilient, heat-loving additions to your garden, succulents are more than ready for this October heat wave. Unlike us, they’re not complaining!

We just restocked, the tables are FULL, and we’re ready for you all weekend!

Unpacking our latest shipment of Fall flowers in 95 degree weather is the most Sacramento thing ever 🥵 Keep an eye on your gardens this week folks! Make sure to water new plantings thoroughly. If you started cool season veggies from seed, do not allow the soil to dry completely. Hopefully that gorgeous Fall weather will be here soon!
