Red's Fly Shop - Fly Tying

Red's Fly Shop - Fly Tying At Red’s Fly Shop, we live and breathe fly fishing—and fly tying is a big part of that heartbeat.

We’re the kind of crew that debates dubbing blends over morning coffee and trims hackle by headlamp if that’s what it takes to get the pattern just right!

Hayden’s Salmonfly “Chow Mein” Foam // Level Up Your Foam Game

A foam Salmonfly dry with purpose.

Built off Hayden’s “Chow Mein,” this pattern focuses on profile, buoyancy, and clean foam technique - perfect for anyone looking to improve their foam tying skills.

One of our favorite takeaways: placing the underbody foam along the sides of the hook shank to create a fuller, more natural profile.

Hayden’s take on a March Brown - alongside Joe’s earlier Floss Pick nymph - tied✌️ways.

The first features a UTC Brassie wire body for added durability and segmentation, while the second is wrapped with a turkey biot quill for a clean, natural profile. Simple, effective, fishy.
And as Hayden reminds us... don’t forget to brush on some superglue before wrapping the quill body!

Finished with an Umpqua jig bomb head, offering a 20% heavier tungsten bead to help this bug get down fast. We love these beads for tight line nymphing and when running a dry-dropper - just make sure your dry is stout enough to keep it afloat.

Give it a tie and let us know what you think! Link to the full video in our bio.

Steelheaders, this one is for you! 🤘

In this fly tying video, Colton breaks down one of the smartest ways to fish steelhead tube flies. By tying a rear station separately from the front station, you can mix and match colors, materials, and profiles to adapt to changing river conditions - without carrying a dozen versions of the same fly.

Tube flies give you maximum versatility with a minimal footprint in your box. Swap colors, adjust contrast, and fine-tune your presentation on the fly, whether you’re fishing low, clear water, high flows, or anything in between.

This modular approach isn’t complicated - it’s efficient, effective, and opens the door to dozens of proven combinations without overloading your fly box.

Who says every Skwala needs rubber legs? Hayden’s twist on the classic stonefly profile swaps the standard wiggle for a cleaner, more natural silhouette — proving that subtle movement and smart material choice can outfish tradition.

Built off a Pheasant Tail foundation, this variation challenges the norm and invites you to think outside the box. Less bulk. Different motion. Same buggy confidence.

Sometimes the best innovation isn’t adding more — it’s rethinking what’s already there.

Skwalas on the brain as the hatch is upon us in central Washington!

Hayden ties a high-density foam skwala designed to ride correctly, float all day, and pull double duty as a single dry or dropper anchor. This pattern is a great way to sharpen your foam skills - focused on clean stacking, precise cuts, and durability without sacrificing profile.
