I really enjoy being around horses, and yesterday I had so much fun working these "Pulling-Bred Belgian" horses. This is a young team, just 2 and 3 year olds, and they work well together. They are almost voice activated in the field. A guy can start and stop them while loading pumpkins from the ground by just a "click" and a "hoo." Just putting on the tack and hitching up the wagon is a big job. So much goes into the training. These guys will back up a wagon into a barn better than most truck drivers I know. A team of horses like this is a big investment for the Amish, just as our "new-used" truck is to us.
So much goes into bringing back fresh produce, pumpkins, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, tomatoes, peppers, squash, and all the other good vegetables. It is fun for me to part of the whold process. I hope that you enjoy the end result - "good, fresh veggies on the dinner table."
Here's a little more about the horse breed from AI,
"Pulling-bred Belgian horses are heavy draft animals specifically selected and conditioned for explosive pulling strength, massive muscle mass, and heavy farm or competition work. They often weigh between 2,000 - 2,800 lbs. A single mature Belgian can pull thousands of pounds of dead weight, while a trained team of two working together can pull extreme loads ranging from 16,000 to over 32,000 pounds. They commonly feature a striking chestnut or sorrel coat with a bright flaxen or white mane and tail. Breeders like Oak Haven Belgians note that despite their immense power, Belgians maintain a calm, kind, and willing attitude toward labor."
