Welcome to our new feature, Meet the Humans! (That make this shop a community). There is no Thread Spun without these people. I spend *a lot* of time with my kids, and they make it possible. I would have neither the energy nor the will to carry on this project at this point without them, and so in case you haven’t met these amazing, interesting and talented humans, allow me to introduce you 😊

First up, our Assistant Manager/Artist in Residence/Photographer/Astrologist/Pole Dancing Baddie, Ava. 🦁 Ava is a Leo! And an expert on the color green and all of our jewelry. If you’ve got deep questions about metals, she’s your girl. Fun and funky style? That’s her. I’m not convinced she’s actually a 90’s baby, and think she’s probably from the 70’s. A badass babe that knew more at 21 than I did at 35 and helps me understand why my Scorpio child is the way he is. When she’s not at the shop discussing true crime with me, she is creating all of the gorgeous flatlays, doing shop product photography and muraling all over town as Ava Sophia | Muralist - catch her outside, but know that you are dealing with a true force of a woman.

Thread Spun lore 🧶 let me spin you a yarn, tell you a tale, about a small social enterprise business that I am pretty sure will feature largely in the story of my life. At least I hope so!

Back in 2010-2015 I was working for a nonprofit that had a federal grant to resettle refugees from around the world. I “provided” social services and case management. I attended a Catholic university to pursue an advanced degree in Peace and Justice. I studied the role of the church in actively thwarting both of those things throughout time. I met people from Iran, Iraq, Burma, Syria, and Eritrea - and each person’s history revealed untruths to what I had been told growing up. And what really happened in this time, is that I learned of my own white saviorism and fragility, my role as a tool of empire, and of the neocolonial destruction that my government was causing around the world. It was a humbling life lesson in how the world really works, a deep dive into its inequities and contradictions, hearing first hand accounts from people who had seen much more than I, had been propagandized much less. I had gone to university in Canada, and our country’s shine had certainly worn off, but I still thought I understood. Anyway, I left that job to pursue this one, and since then, I’ve been doing things differently. I would love it if you’d come do things differently, too. 🫂 Stay tuned for part 2, as they say.
