The Rockets Red Glare Act has updated laws regarding fireworks in Oklahoma.
1. Allows use of consumer fireworks on private property year-round. You must notify local fire department before igniting fireworks on private property. Counties can no longer prohibit displays unless a burn ban is in effect.
2. Bottle rockets / stick rockets are now legal after 45 years!
3. Fireworks stands can now sell fireworks year-round.
Many are celebrating the return of bottle-rockets while others are unhappy with the year-round-fireworks bill signed into law by Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt.
The "Rocket’s Red Glare Act" - SB1948 is a landmark Oklahoma law that allows the legal, year-round sale and noncommercial discharge of consumer fireworks on private property.
We spoke to several Oklahoma residents who applaud the decision stating “We are taking our freedom back.” While others, such as Mary Sweeton, says “I’m concerned about my house catching fire and my dogs will freak out about fireworks.”
Others say the law isn’t fair statewide, and want it expanded.
We’ve found two companies who sell fireworks year-round in Oklahoma.
Fireworks Warehouse OKC, in Oklahoma City.
Impact Fireworks LLC in Guthrie.
The new law has strict weather and notification requirements. Let’s break that down.
Key Provisions:
Year-Round Sales: Licensed retailers are no longer restricted to selling fireworks only during specific times of the year.
No Skyrocket Bans: The state ban on skyrockets with sticks ("bottle rockets") has been removed.
County Restrictions: Counties are prohibited from restricting private, non-commercial outdoor consumer fireworks under standard circumstances.
Mandatory Restrictions & Conditions: You can only light fireworks on private property if you strictly follow these safety rules:
- Fire Department Notification: You must notify your local fire department before using the fireworks. This is NOT asking permission. Only notification, whether by call, email, or other communication.
- Burn Bans: Fireworks are strictly prohibited if a county burn ban is in effect.
- Weather Conditions: You cannot use fireworks if any of the following weather conditions are present: Sustained winds exceeding 20 mph, Relative humidity is below 25%, The 10-hour dead fuel moisture level is below 9%.
City dwellers shouldn’t celebrate just yet.
While the Rocket's Red Glare Act relaxes state rules, city ordinances may still prohibit fireworks entirely.
The new law primarily empowers rural residents and those living in unincorporated areas outside of strict municipal fire bans.
