June 6th 1944 - D Day - The 2nd and 5th Ranger Battalion participated in Omaha beach Normandy and the Pointe du Hoc Normandy. 2nd Ranger Battalion scaled the cliffs at Pointe du Hoc. 5th Ranger Battalion assaulted Omaha Beach. They wore these M1 Helmets that we used to call still pots and they had a Ranger orange diamond on the back of their helmet with either number 2 or 5 depending on which battalion. The white leadership stripe was for Officers or NCO’s - The vertical stripe was for Officers and the horizontal stripe was for NCO’s.

Today we honor their courage and continue their legacy with modern day Rangers.

Today, we honor the memory of Sergeant Travis Atkins, a true American hero from Bozeman, Montana. On this day in 2007, Sgt. Atkins gave his life to save the lives of his fellow soldiers in Iraq, embodying the highest values of courage, sacrifice, and love of country.

Awarded the Medal of Honor, his legacy lives on — not just in the history books, but in the hearts of Montanans and all Americans who hold freedom dear.

We remember him with deep gratitude and unwavering respect.
