FUN FACT FRIDAY! 🧶🤔

Sometimes a customer purchase sends us down a rabbit hole… and THIS one took us straight to Meadville!

A customer recently purchased these “carpet balls” from our vendor in booths 26–30. She told us her aunt worked at the Talon factory in Meadville and that these were used in the area “where the fabric is next to the zipper.” She was planning to use them for crochet.

Well, naturally, I had to know more. 😂

So down the Talon rabbit hole I went!

And then, naturally, I had to see if WE had any Talon zippers in the store… which turned into my very own 814 scavenger hunt. 😂🔎

Spoiler alert: I FOUND THEM.

If you’re from this area, you probably recognize the name TALON. But did you know that Talon’s Meadville operation became a major part of the town’s history?

The zipper story actually began in the late 1800s, with Whitcomb Judson developing an early metal fastener. Swedish inventor Gideon Sundback later refined the design into something much closer to the zipper we know today.

In 1913, manufacturing moved to Meadville, Pennsylvania.

At its height, Talon’s Meadville factories employed around 5,000 people in a town of fewer than 19,000! The factories operated around the clock to keep up with demand.

And here’s a fun little twist: the fastener wasn’t originally called a zipper! B.F. Goodrich used the fastener on rubber galoshes in 1921 and called the boot the “Zipper.” The name eventually stuck.

So one customer buys a handful of “carpet balls” for crochet…

I go down a Talon history rabbit hole…

…and suddenly I’m wandering through 814 looking for vintage zippers. 🤣

THIS is why I love vintage. You never know when one little object is going to connect you to a person, a factory, a town, a family story—or send you on a scavenger hunt through the entire store.

I may be a little biased, but the talent some of our vendors have when it comes to decorating their spaces makes me want to invite them all to my house and say, “Okay, now do this… but everywhere.” 😂

Cookie’s Corner in the warehouse is no exception. Thoughtfully curated holiday decor, equestrian finds, medical pieces, kitchen treasures, and so much more are all tucked into her little corner.

There’s so much to look at, and somehow it all feels like it belongs together. That’s a talent all its own. ❤️

This shelf space feels like it belongs in a gentleman’s study where the lamp is always on, the books have stories of their own, and there’s probably a good conversation happening somewhere nearby.

Ashtrays, lighters, books and literature, wooden chests and plenty of those little details that make a space feel collected rather than decorated.

A little scholarly. A little smoky. A little mysterious. And very much worth a look.

Warehouse Booth 2 has a little bit of everything, but somehow it all works together. Charming linens and lace sit alongside horses and dogs, lighters and razors, with plenty of other little treasures tucked throughout.

We have quite the collection of ephemerists in our midst at 814… and 34A is an entire booth dedicated to the good stuff! 👀

So, what exactly is an ephemerist?

Ephemera (ih-FEM-er-uh) are objects originally intended to be temporary or short-lived — things like postcards, tickets, advertisements, menus, brochures, matchbooks, pamphlets, calendars and other little pieces of everyday life that somehow managed to survive.

An ephemerist is someone who collects or studies ephemera.

And we want to know: what kind of ephemera intrigues you the most? 🤔
