SUBJECT: URGENT SAFETY WARNING: Dangerous Ice Conditions and Extreme Cold Forecast for Winter Games Weekend

OKOBOJI, IOWA – As the University of Okoboji Winter Games approaches this weekend, the Arnolds Park / Okoboji Fire & Rescue Department is issuing a critical safety advisory regarding rapidly deteriorating weather conditions and variable ice stability on the Iowa Great Lakes.

Unsafe and Variable Ice Conditions Recent weather patterns have created highly inconsistent ice thickness across the lakes. While some areas may appear solid, others—particularly on West Lake Okoboji and near bridge channels—remain thin or open. The public is strongly advised to exercise extreme caution.

"Ice conditions are currently variable and potentially hazardous," warns the Fire Department. "Do not assume that ice safe for foot traffic in one area is safe for vehicles or large crowds in another. We urge all Winter Games participants to avoid venturing into unknown areas of the ice, especially at night."

Extreme Cold & Wind Chill Warning In addition to ice hazards, the National Weather Service and local forecasts indicate a life-threatening cold front moving into the area.

Friday Forecast: Wind chill values are expected to drop below -40°F.

Frostbite Risk: At these temperatures, frostbite can occur on exposed skin in less than 10 minutes.

Safety Guidelines for Winter Games Attendees:

Limit Exposure: Avoid prolonged time outdoors on Friday. If you must be outside, cover all exposed skin.

Vehicle Safety: We strongly discourage driving vehicles onto the ice due to the variable thickness.

Buddy System: Never travel alone on the ice.

Monitor Alcohol Consumption: Alcohol accelerates heat loss and impairs judgment regarding cold and ice safety.

"Our priority is ensuring everyone enjoys the Winter Games safely," the department added. "Please heed these warnings so our crews can focus on celebration rather than rescue."
