Happy 100th birthday JIMMY CARTER!
An interesting Oregon anecdote; the late State Senator and Oregon Supreme Court Justice Betty Roberts ran a strong race for Governor in the 1974 primary, finishing second to Bob Straub in a close three way primary (Jim Redden was third.) Senator Wayne Morse was attempting a second US Senate comeback and won the primary, but died in July. Betty was nominated by the Democratic Central Committee to replace him. In her memoir "With Grit and By Grace" she recalled that she had two choices for a national Democrat to appear at an event late in the campaign: Bob Strauss- the Chair of the DNC and Jimmy Carter in his last term as Governor of Georgia. She chose Strauss because he was better known (Senator Lloyd Bentsen of Texas, who was head of the Democratic Senate Campaign Committee, also made an appearance for Roberts.)
Two years later Roberts was the co-chair of Carter's Presidential campaign in Oregon campaign, along with State Senator Fred Heard. She described the family rivalry- with her husband, State Rep Keith Skelton, supported Senator Frank Church of Idaho, who won the Oregon primary; Carter third (Governor Jerry Brown of CA finished second as a write in candidate). The rivalry apparently continued because, in Robert's' book, she stated that Carter won the primary.
Carter lost to President Ford by a very narrow margin in November, largely because Eugene McCarthy won 4%—his best national showing—as a spoiler third-party candidate. In 1980, Carter beat Ted Kennedy in the primary. His final two rallies in the 1980 General election campaign were held in Portland and Seattle the night before Election Day, but Reagan won 48% to 38%, close to the national results. Independent John Anderson won almost 10% in Oregon, one of his strongest showings.
President Carter has returned to Oregon a number of times over the years for fishing and book signings at Powell's Books, Inc. I regret I never attended one. Carter is often called our best ex-president, but he didn't get enough credit for his accomplishments as president.
