Update on Buying the Property, 8-6-26:

A long-ish one, folks, as the person (me, Scott), who is coordinating this campaign between the myriad activities here at Tsunami Books, is going on a 10-day vacation with his daughter, to return refreshed and ready to get it done.

614 Donors, 266 Shares, 8700 Views, $47,318 through GoFundMe. https://www.gofundme.com/f/after-30-years-of-paying-rent-help-tsunami-buy-the-property So far, between the three funding methods we have raised over $140,000. To you thousands of good-hearted people who have been helping, through your well-wishes and ideas, your curiosity and generosity: thank you for making this quixotic journey so worth the effort.

Big News! I wrote a 30 page letter to author Barbara Kingsolver--which I whittled down to 4 pages-- which I'm dropping in the mail tonight. FYI, we don't want her money (although "The $10 Movement" is for everyone), but just the proper words of support, private or public, however it comes. She's been one of my favorite writers for almost 40 years. Brainstorming with her chokes me up just to imagine.

One thing about Barbara: She loves to read letters from the people who read her books. She asks that letters be sent to her daughter, who is also her manager. The address is:
Lilly Kingsolver
Office of Barbara Kingsolver
PO Box 160
Meadowview, Va 24361

I mentioned in the letter that I'm going to ask you to write her a note, to let her know we would appreciate her interest. At the bottom of your return address, please write "re: Tsunami Books, Eugene, Or."

Barbara's newest novel, "Partita," is due October 6. I just read the review copy, and loved it. It is a book for piano players, and everyone else.

My friend Serena Markstrom Nugent, who said I can use her name, came up with the idea to write your favorite authors, to ask for their support, public or private. She even suggests we have a party around it. Please remember, we don't want their money, we want their help as writers, and lovers of Indie Bookstores.

I hear Cheryl Strayed reads every Instagram message. And Ann Patchett, whom I will soon be writing, accepts her role as a Patron Saint of Bookstores. Anybody know W***y Vlautin? He'll be getting letters form us. Writing letters through the Dog Days of August is what we do. Who else in the Book World should we write?

It's a good time of year to rest well, Folks. To prepare for a long good end to a difficult year. The best to us all!
